Norwegian Air: "random" seats and carry-on bags

Norwegian Air: "random" seats and carry-on bags

We (family of 4) are flying Norwegian for the first time this summer, SF to London. Two questions:

1. They charge $45 p.p. for advance seat assignments. We're thinking of rolling the dice with random assignments however we have two 7 year-old kids. Will they be reasonable/accommodating in not seating a 7 year-old alone and without a parent? Are the four of us likely to end up together?

2. Our tickets (LowFare) allow us each 1 carry-on bag with specific limits on weight and size (10kg, 55x40x23 cm). How strictly is this enforced? Will someone actually weigh our carry-on bag? Will they test that it fits in the carry-on sizing frame?

Thanks in advance for your advice!

1. It's a gamble. With two children in tow I would personally avoid the stress of the seating issue and prepay and select your seats in advance. Please don't expect other passengers who have paid for seat selection to be moved to accommodate your family.

2. Always best to follow the airline rules. They are there for everyone and try to ensure fairness. I flew them BOS/LGW a few weeks back with them and all cabin baggage was being sized at check-in. A week earlier it was the weight that was the focus.

There is also a current thread regarding the hand baggage issue which you might wish to read

"Will they be reasonable/accommodating in not seating a 7 year-old alone and without a parent?"

What is resonable is not expecting anyone else to accommodate your choices to not pay a fee to be seated together.

You either take the risk, or pay the fee. No reasonableness about it in the eyes of the airline when they have already given you a choice.

from the uk you can do the low fare + which at a very good price includes seat, hold luggage and meal, is this available from the us? makes a lot of sense to do it this way

depnds on how busy the flight is as a lot of people would do the +fare

I think you should pay the fee to ensure that the kids are not put in random seats. You could have a situation out there where there are many families travelling and have pre booked their seats… no way would they give up their seats!

If you want to ensure you sit together, pay the fee. If not don't be the one to complain and expect other people who have paid to move for you.

Also with regards to your luggage, expect that it will be weighed and measured and pack accordingly then you won't get a nasty surprise if you are "caught" and have to pay for it to be put in the hold etc

I agree with the others. Either pay to select your seats, or accept with good grace whatever seats you get allocated.

1) It's a low-cost carrier. If you haven't paid for it don't complain when you don't get it. However if you check in online as soon at it opens you are more likely (but not guaranteed) to get four seats or at least two pairs of seats together.

2) It's a low-cost carrier. Expect the size and weight limits to be enforced, or to be charged and told to gate-check your luggage.

<<Will they be reasonable/accommodating in not seating a 7 year-old alone and without a parent?>>

If you don't think it's important enough to purchase seats so that you can be seated next to your child why should the airline think it's important enough to give it to you for free? Why should other passengers think it's important enough to give up their seats when you ask them to swap?

How would you respond if you were seated beside your 7 year old and the parents of a 3 year old asked you to swap seats because they were too cheap to pay for assigned seating?

Agree with above.

Do not expect to get for free what you are not willing to pay for. Expect that the airline enforces their own rule.

If you think it to be important to sit together, then pay and reserve seats. If it is not important to you, then do not be surprised if you are not sitting together.

Do expect your hand luggage to be checked for size and weight. If you are over the limit then you will have to pay a high fee to gate check the hand luggage or you will have to get rid of some of the stuff.
