Flying through on Air Asia to Penang - question

Hi, I am flying from Australia via KL and then to Penang.

I am just about to book and have a quick question about fly thru option.

If I put Gold Coast to Penang, does anyone know if this means my bags go through to Penang - and what happens with immigration.

I have only done fly through to other international destinations and I know in that case you don't leave airside and you bags go through so no immigration in KL.

I am not sure if it is worth booking a fly through to a domestic destination (Penang) or if booking two flights is effectively the same thing. (ie - you have to collect bags and go through immigration anyway.

Sorry to be long winded. Any advice appreciated. (and the typo in the heading - which can't be changed - is a tip not to post when you are half asleep)

Caroline.

You'll get maybe a quicker answer on the kuala lumpur or general malaysia forum. This question comes up very frequently. You're always better and easier off with the fly thru as gives u a protected connection

Here's the page from AirAsia listing the steps for transiting in Kuala Lumpur. Better to talk to the AirAsia counter staff in Gold Coast to see if you need to collect your checked baggage in Kuala Lumpur.

If it's FlyThru you clear Immigration in KL as that is your first point of entry but stay in transit and your bags go through to Penang. It is also as stated a protected connection in case your first flight is delayed. For these reasons FlyThru is more expensive than booking two separate flights where if you miss your connection you are responsible for booking the next flight at your cost.

Thanks so much. The process on their web page for the international to domestic transfer wasn't clear - however, it seems you don't have to go through the usual immigration queue but rather go through a transit area immigration. I think I have that correct.

Appreciated.

Yes you pass thru immigration on your way to the domestic area of KLIA2. It is usually not that busy unlike the main queue for most of the passengers who are not in transit.
