Ryanair randomly charging to check carry ons?

Question

Had the worst experience today with Ryanair flying from Mallorca to Barcelona. We had priority boarding, so we were one of the first on line to get on the plane. They decided to make us and a handful of other people measure our carryon bags to see if they met their requirements. I swear they shrunk their measuring box because when I measured at home, my bag was complaint but didn’t fit in the box. My husband’s bag did, but regardless, they charged us both 70€ to check it, saying they weren’t complaint. One man got so mad that they did this to his family, he pushed past the gate agent and tried to get on the plane — they had to call security. The weirdest thing was they only did this to a few people. Everyone else got on the plane with their carry on without getting charged. People who had significantly bigger carry ons than me too. Has this happened to anyone else? Avoiding Ryanair like the plague.

Ryanair is famous for enforcing the rules, especially at its base airports, and the gate agents are quite skilled at eyeballing bags that look too big. Remember that the measurements include the wheels and handles, and "it was fine at home/on another airline" is meaningless.

Kristin, that is not an entirely rational comment. As pointed out we don't know what you ..and other travellers...booked. Nor do we know the size of your bags.

Many think that they have a size compliant wheelie bag but either have not included the wheels in the measurements, or have stuffed it so full that it is out of shape and no longer complies to the airline’s rule.

Perhaps they had purchased the large cabin bag as an extra?

Large cabin bag (for purchase) …. 55 × 40 x 20cm max (10kg)

Free cabin bag … 40 x 20 x 25cm max

Your bag didn’t fit. End of discussion it doesn’t matter what happened to anyone else that’s not relevant. The terms and condition you agreed to said that your bag had to fit said this over and over on here just because other people tell you they got away with it if the agent decides to enforce it they are well within their rights. This is how these budget airlines make their money

I do not know about others, but I try and check my bag in the box by the check in before going past security. This way if it is too big I have some time to figure what to do
