Dealing with last minutes trip cancellation

Less than 10 days ship departure, received notification that Nov18 trip with ship Expedition has been cancelled.

Initial reaction is total panic, so much time and money have been spent including side trips.

Open this topic, hope can exchange information to help each other of affected fellow passengers.

I remember watching with excitement as I followed our ship on marinetraffic.com on its preceding expeditions (which I learned about here). Anyone monitoring the Expedition might've started wondering.

So today is the day I make the first installment of our final payment for Expedition, Feb. 19, 2016.

I was so looking forward to this, but now - not so much.

We have all flights and some accommodations booked. We have booked and paid for the Navimag ferry for after our trip to Antarctica. We need to book busses and a rental car soon.

If our trip on Expedition is cancelled, it will be a big mess. (Yes we do have insurance.)

I hope those of you with cancelled trips can make some kind of suitable arrangements. We are all anxious to hear about how all this is handled. I am certainly not impressed so far.

@maryann-ns, you should tell them you are postponing payment until you know the ship is ok....

But for the ship itself, i can tell you it's a really great ship with wonderful crew.

Went with them to Svalbard in July 2014 and wanted to go with them to Antarctica last season but the trip was full.

I paid half the final payment today and told them what I though of their phone message: "Once you're book, you're going."

We were on Expedition when the first trip was cancelled last year so we have some idea of how you feel. There are a number of booking offices in Ushuaia that do last minute bookings. Our travel agent was able to get us onto another ship through Polar Latitudes. The trip was amazing!

Hi

We were meant to be on the 3rd of the 2014 MV Expedition trips that were cancelled. Our travel agent through their Oz travel wholesaler (Chimu) moved us at no extra cost to the Akademik Ioffe in a much more expensive cabin. A shorter trip though. Many others totally missed out on going south. G eventually paid us fully for extra nights accommodation but again all was chased up by our great travel agent (Thor Travel in Adelaide). Out travel insurance did not help as we had not commenced our cruise / journey; therefore in their fine print, consequential additional costs were not going to be covered. The cruise cost would have been covered for a cancellation but we had 3 weeks of other South America travel also locked in.

Blitz G on the web and shame them until you get justice. They do have insurance for this; so keep all receipts.

Hi everyone,

In August, we took our ship out of service to fit new engines to upgrade and enhance the performance of the vessel. In planning this project we consulted with specialists who agreed to a project timeframe that would have resulted in the work being completed with sufficient time to arrive in Ushuaia in advance of planned departures.

Our contractors recently advised us that the required work will not be completed in time. We were therefore compelled by these unexpected events, to cancel two scheduled departures. We appreciate the notice is last minute and we apologize for the difficulties and inconveniences this has caused.

We are very much aware of how much time, effort, energy, money and excitement goes into planning and preparing for a trip like this. The Antarctic is not just any other trip. It is THE trip of a lifetime for anyone. To have it cancelled must be simply devastating. Again, we apologize.

We are working with those effected, and offering options on the way forward. Effected travellers can always reach us by e-mailing customerservice@gadventures.com

Well it is good to see someone from G Adventures here. It is too bad it is only because someone posted on your FaceBook page to suggest you come here.

To say the least you need to be much more pro-active in damage control.

We, who have future bookings on Expedition, would like to know what compensation arrangements you are making. If my trip is cancelled then I would have thousands of dollars in flights, other tour bookings and accommodations which would be in jeopardy. Just giving a refund and a promise of a spot on Expedition next year is not enough.

Hi maryann-ns,

Thanks for the post. There is nothing to suggest any more cancellations are needed. I am happy to discuss this further, but do not feel this is the place for hypothetical. Please feel free to drop me a line at custmerservice@gadventures.com to discuss further if you wish.
