train from Munich to Passau

We are a group of five bicyclists who want to train from Munich to Passau. We want to book this train ride about a month in advance online. Should we catch the train at the airport station using a group Bayern ticket and what is the most central station to depart in Passau?

The main station in Passau is Passau Hbf = Haupbahnhof.

There are no direct trains from the airport to Passau.

Interesting for the first part, as when I looked at connections from Munich airport towards Passau the timetable shows the first 25 minutes of the journey to be by bus. You won't get five bikes on a bus!

There is a way of doing the trip entirely by train, in a somewhat roundabout fashion via Munich Hbf although that if I remember correctly means getting from the deep level station up to the surface level platforms.

Also, use the regional trains between Munich and Passau as you will otherwise be changing trains en route and therefore lugging bikes around.

One for a local expert I think.

Trains to Passau stop at Freising near the airport. Regional trains (RE, RB) take bikes, ICE don't.

Buy a Bayern ticket and bike tickets at the airport, take the S1 to Neufahrn and then change for the other branch of the S1 to Freising. You can get train times on bahnde and specify a route 'with bicycle'. It ought to be easy to cycle straight from the airport to Freising but the airport webiste doesn't have a section for arrival by bike so it might not be possible, although that would be surprising for a German airport!

PS, a bit more googljng found an article about cycling from the airport, so it must be possible:

There are only regional trains on this route. Thus you cannot book anything in advance.

Bayern Ticket for sure.

bahn.de/i/…bavaria-ticket.shtml

Note that you also need a day ticket for your bicycles which is EUR 5 each.

You may be able to cycle from the airport to Freising station. Or travel by S-Bahn S1 to Freising. Even better than Neufahrn to change for Freising is Lohhof has this station has a central platform.

Note that the S-Bahn you have to get on will split in Neufahrn. You have to get on the part to Freising, not on the one heading back to the airport. The Freising part is the first part in driving direction.

Enter the S-Bahn at the doors next to the bicycle symbol on the outside. As with the S-Bahn trains the floor level is identical with the platform level this is really easy.

DB timetable

http://reiseauskunft.bahn.de/bin/query.exe/en

Start: München Flughafen Terminal

Destination: Passau Hbf

and add as stopover

Via (1): Lohhof

You can also select as means of transport "only local transport" (for the Bayern Ticket) and "carriage of bicycles required" to be on the safe side.
