Washington DC to Miami April 2014

Hi,

We've booked our flights from Manchester to Washington DC for April next year, but that's about it. Looking for all and any advice on a trip between DC and Miami for the road trip portion of this holiday.

Four adults travelling, 8th - 22nd April.

We're still very flexible as we've only booked the outbound flights, but a rough idea of the plan is:

A couple of days in Washington DC

Road trip, ending in Miami

A couple of days in Miami followed by 3 or 4 days in the Carribean

So the road trip portion would be roughly 10th - 16th April.

A few questions:

6-7 days enough to get to Miami?

You'll have to excuse my ignorance, but the only obvious places (to me) to stop at are Charleston and Savannah. Any other recommendations for overnight stops along the way? Happy with national parks, beaches, cities... anything that may be of interest.

I have started a bit of research already and Asheville looks like a good place to maybe have our second overnight stay after leaving DC. Good place/idea?

Ideas for a first stop after leaving DC?

Ideas for stops after leaving Savannah?

Anything to consider or take into account in terms of our trip being during Easter? Busier and more expensive if there are US holidays during this time?

Cheers and thanks in advance.

Pete

You've got 6 - 7 days to travel about 1400 miles, which is not too rushed. Is it enough time? That depends on how much time you want to spend in each place. A day or two in Asheville (2 nights), Charleston (2 nights), Savannah (1 night) and St Augustine, Fl (worth a stop - lovely old Spanish fort and historical downtown area) would give you some time to get the 'feel' of each place. If you add in a stop between DC and Asheville (suggestion would be Charlottesville, VA), there will be less time to explore each place. As for travelling at Easter time, coastal cities like Charleston and Savannah will probably be busier and more expensive than Asheville. Charleston in particular can get busy in the spring - probably be a good idea to book your lodging there in advance.

We (my husband and two teenagers) are planning the same trip at the same time and would welcome any further replies.

A great place to stop would also be the Great Smoky Mts. NP. Stay in Townsend and drive the Cades Cove Loop Rd. to see beautiful scenery and wildlife. You can then head over to Charleston and Savannah and down the coast. Two places in Florida to stop are Amelia Island and St. Augustine. Both historic. Amelia also has a lovely beach area.

A lot of people travel during the Easter holiday but will find that more of a problem in the beach areas of Florida than in Charleston and Savannah.

Let us know if you have other questions.
