bicycling and camping

Looking for solid advice on best spots in Door cty to camp (prefer public - no kids, no frills) and bike. I'm happy to hit the roads but would love some trails too and good access to sweet spots near lake or bay. Thanks!

Peninsula State Park is a much loved spot to enjoy camping if not full.

I'm not aware of any adults-only campsites in Door County.

Newport State Park has rustic secluded waterfront hike-in sites and about 5-10 miles of doubletrack. I think you can bike to each site.

Peninsula State Park has almost 500 sites, singletrack trails, and a 6 mile limestone trail that is adjacent to campgrounds and park backroads. Nor-Door, a very good bike shop, is across the street from the entrance.

Door County is popular for road cycling, with short, steep hills.

Peninsula State Park is one of the largest in the state and very popular with bikers but also with families, lots of kids in Door County in the summer.

Good cycling maps

This map is ok for routes south of Egg Harbor. For north of Egg Harbor, I think some of the recommendations are nonsensical

Thanks very much all. I'm biking solo for this trip - no kids with me this time, but not looking for adults only, just open to some tougher, longer trails. Soooo, what are the odds of getting a non-reservable site at Peninsula on a Thursday afternoon next week? Slim & none, I'm guessing. Wondering if I'd have better odds with Point Beach? Also wondering about any simple tent campgrounds near Peninsula (county parks maybe).

No county parks with camping in Door County.

You could try Potawatomie State Park. It's in southern Door County. It's not far from the Ahnapee State Trail, a rail/trail which will take you to Algoma and beyond. It has offroad trails, but I don't know if they are single or doubletrack.

You could call Peninsula and ask about your chances of getting a site.

Unless you are dead set on camping you could look at Julies, an old school motel with a great on site restaurant that sits right at the main entrance to Peninsula State Park. It is also across the street from the Gibraltar Grill which has a nice bar.

rfn, little hotels are on the backburner, I'm hoping I don't have to do that. Thanks for the good tip.
