If your child occupies a seat, technically, he/she has to pay for a ticket separately. However, on a train with seats available, you can just place the child in the open seat. On a full train though, if you want the child to travel for free, you would need to hold onto him/her in your seat area. A child without a separate ticket is not eligible to get a seat reservation.
