Yudanaka or Shibu? Which one is better?

Hello!

I will be visiting Yamanouchi for two nights in December - I plan to visit the monkey park and then relax at the hot springs.

I am just wondering if it's better to stay in Yudanaka or in Shibu? Availability is limited for the dates I have chosen and all the ryokans in Shibu are a lot more expensive - but if I stay in Shibu I get access to the 9 public baths so that could be fun. Is it worth spending a lot more to have access to those 9 public baths? Are they nice and is any of those public baths an outdoor one?

Accommodation in Yudanaka on the other hand is much cheaper. Shimaya onsen has great reviews and I am considering staying there - their website tells me that you only have access to 3 public baths if staying in Yudanaka.

What should I do? Your recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you!

Shibu Onsen is prettier than Yudanaka, and it is nice to go strolling up the main street at night. I stayed at Andaikan, an older ryokan which was a reasonable price. It has its own in-house onsen which is what I used. I didn't go to any of the public ones The only public bath that is outdoors is the footbath.

Thank you for the input @selsy.

Has anyone visited the 9 hot springs in Shibu? Are they nice and worth visiting?

We stayed at Shibu onsen. It was really nice and charming. Old Japan feel. The ryokan we stayed at was Kokuya. Excellent place. Here is the link to my review of the ryokan.

My husband and son did onssen hopping in the 9 onsens in Shibu after dinner. Their feedback was that the onsen were all different. Diff temperature. They had fun. After onsen waking, they could walk in the snowy town at night in their yakata!

Yes, I agree that Shibu Onsen is better with its old charming Japan feel. Should try the 9 Onsen bath in Shibu.

Is it true that the town of Shibu Onsen is sometimes empty with shops and restaurants closed? We are planning a visit in September and want to stay here but not going to if that is the case. Advice please?

Shops and restaurants generally close for 1 day a week and in Shibu Onsen this seemed mostly to be on Tuesday. Regarding restaurants, your accommodation is likely to offer dinner and breakfast as an option, and it is worth taking this option. There are not a lot of restaurants in Shibu Onsen.

Thanks for your help. Can you suggest a good ryokan in Shibu Onsen for family of four (2 teenage sons) with private bathroom?
