Come to Capo Vaticano in Calabria for your holidays

June and September are great months to visit Calabria, and a fine place to linger for a few days is the promontory that stretches from the Golfo di S. Eufemia to the Golfo di Gioia. Start out in Vibo Valentia, an ancient Calabrian city that has begrudgingly hosted Greeks, Romans, Byzantines, Normans and Bourbons. Formerly known as Monteleone, Vibo is not a particularly beautiful city, but its castle, a fine example of Angevin military architecture, is perhaps the most interesting one to visit in Calabria. The 14th-century cloister in the church of the Rosary offers splendid respite from the traffic that torments every Calabrian city, and the church of San Michele, designed by Baldassare Peruzzi, is a gem worth seeking out. Marching back through the ages, you'll want to see the Byzantine temple of S. Ruba, the ruins of an old Roman baths, walls dating from the time when Vibo was called Hipponion, and the remains of a 6th-century Greek acropolis.

we are 2 or possilby 4 adults who would like to find a place on or near the beach in Sept or early Oct of next year....we need a place on or near the beach, without lots of hills or steps to climb, as one of us has some walking issues....we have never been to Calabria, and would like some advice......we would prefer a cottage or apartment for two weeks, perhaps one week in two different locations.....any help would be appreciated....thanks

We stayed in a beautiful village in Ricadi very close to tropea. It has apartments right on the sea with a beautiful sandy beach and pool. They have a shuttle that can bring you into Tropea but they charge for it. We were there in August 2008 and it was very busy with mainly Italian and German tourists, check their website:www.villaggioilgabbiano.com. we also stayed in Hotel Residence Tirreno in Tropea which is I think 500 meters from their private beach but they have a free shuttle into Tropea and to the beach. We rented in the Hotel but they also have Apartments and this place was also very nice. Hope this helps.
