Visiting Crater Lake early June 2018 - camping?

My husband and I are planning to visit Crater Lake in early June (arriving 6/2). Looks like it's not ideal for lodging/road access, but we don't have much wiggle room in our itinerary, and I'm hoping that this low-snow year will mean earlier access. I need ideas of where we can tent camp (the NPS website says the campgrounds won't open till mid-June) in the area, and don't-miss hikes. We've only got one night/day in the area before heading to Lake Shasta. Thanks!

Lower elevation campgrounds such as Joseph H. Stewart State Recreation Area, or Valley of the Rogue State Park (both operated by Oregon State Parks department), or Cantrall Buckley Park , or even Howard Prairie Lake (run by Jackson County Parks) are lovely at that time of year. That also puts you closer to the other delights of southern Oregon: world-class theater and live music, restaurants, wineries, microbreweries, cheesemakers, chocolatiers and more. (Sorry, I'm a little proud of what's here besides Crater Lake.)

Crater Lake rarely has a "low-snow" winter! To see real time photos, click on the link below during daylight hours. Ignore the pretty pink photo at the top as it is not live:

The west rim road will probably be open then, but it's never a sure thing.

Look at Jackson County Park website for some camping options:

On the east side, off Hwy 97, is Collier Memorial State Park campground. It's a lovely location and as an added bonus, there is an outdoor logging museum that is very interesting:

This is great; thank you! I wish that we had more time to explore southern Oregon; this trip will just whet our appetites! (We're hoping to raft on the Rogue on our way north to the Portland area.)

Hope NoUglyOneYet don't mind me joining this topic as I am in a similar situation, arriving in early June and also looking for campground.

Other than the suggested Collier Memorial State Park campground on the east side, I am also checking those west of Crater Lake: Farewell Bend State Recreation Area and Union Creek campground. However people warn about mosquito in the area without mentioning the months. So I am wondering if anyone knows if mosquito situation is bad in early June? These two campground seem closer to Crater Lake.

There are a couple of campgrounds at Diamond Lake that are pretty close to Crater Lake. Yes, mozzies will be out and hungry in June... unless it's still snowing ;-)

You wanted chocolatiers? From Central Point to Ashland to tiny Williams, southern Oregon's got 'em. We even just finished the Oregon Chocolate Festival. Sorry, you'll have to wait until next March for the next one.

Thanks again half-brit! Well I know what I miss out in my packing list then! :-)

Guess it is a correct decision to spend more time along the Oregon Coast than at Crater Lake between mid May and early June. But I do hope your previous advice in another post about the general weather in May is wrong as all pre-trip planning information I read mentioned May as one of the best months to photo Oregon Coast. :-) :-)

Take care!

Well, for your sake I hope I'm wrong too LOL :-)

But . . . having lived on the coast for many years, methinks I'm not! That said, we never know what kind of weather we will get at anytime. Sometimes May is grey & gloomy with little sunshine, and sometimes we get glorious sunny days. And sometimes rain.

Had hail today on the coast. Warmer than you folks though!
