Going places

A Taste of ... Anguilla

What is it? Hungry's Lunch Truck

Where is it? The Valley [Across the road from the Catholic Church, or south of the post office, or north of The Valley Bistro]

Describe it: Feasting your eyes on Anguilla's shocking turquoise beaches is free. Feasting anywhere else will cost you an arm and a leg.* The small island off St. Maarten (population: 13,000) has a reputation for fine -- but costly -- cuisine. To save a few bucks, do as the locals do and visit Hungry's Lunch Truck in The Valley. Owner Irad Gumbs, a professional chef, serves a host of Anguillian specialty soups such as whelk, conch and pea with pig tail. The humble truck also whips up salads, pastas and quesadillas you won't find at Taco Bell ... lobster in a tortilla, anyone?

How much? $5 U.S. for a bowl of soup, $14 U.S. for a lobster quesadilla.

*Anguilla has plenty of inexpensive places to eat, but "Irad's," as it's commonly known, or sometimes "Ratty's," is by far the best for high quality food. Lunch only, and only on normal workdays. "Professional chef" is an overworked term here, but Irad really is, and was also the Food & Beverage Manager at Cap Juluca.

Irad's is one of those special things we discover in Anguilla, like Little Bay or Bankie's music or sunset at the Malliouhana bar or Mabel's soup or the colour of the water as you come over the last hill on the way to Shoal Bay.

Thanks Islander. Two questions:

Is it only open M-F?

Where is it located? Bob Green's site says it is near the government buildings roundabout - I have yet to see it. Does he park in different locations? I took pictures of the new church in April and still did not see it.

Thanks for the post.

If you face Valley Bistro Irad parks his truck in the lot to the left. After he left Cap he had a restaurant in Sandy Ground which was excellent. Believe there were some lease problems so he went to the van. Not sure what days he is there but his food is excellent

The Wallblake roundabout is some distance from the government centre, so Bob Green's description confuses things. And when Bob wrote that, Irad was parking further south.

He's always in the same place when he's open.

Yes, open M - F only, except holidays.

Hungry's van is one of our Anguillan highlights. We head out to UnAmore to get the teens pizza and swing by Hungry's on our return to Shoal Bay for the adult dinners-out of this world seafood burritos. We usually hit Hungry's four or more visits during our stay.

Ok, I am adding this to the spreadsheet for Nov - my quest is to find Hungrys and get some Mabels soup. Have not been successful with either in the past.

We really like to eat in, no dressing up, no driving, just sit on the porch at Meads Bay, watch the sunset, some good eats,. a little TV and then bed so we can be up and on the beach by 8am - now thats the life.
