Gay friendly?

Me and my partner want to visit Halcyon Cove By Rex Resorts - Antigua, we are a gay couple so we are unsure of the laws in this area. We are not looking for a gay place to make love.. we just want to enjoy a normal holiday and have a laugh together, I would appreciate any information regarding staying at Antigua

Hi Dane, On Barbados l have friends who go regularly and they are quite open as a couple, they never have trouble. I have met Gay couples on Barbados but l think it is a more social island, the nightlife can be hopping there if you want it and everyone mixes.

I can’t say that l have ever noticed any Gay couples on Antigua but l tend to socialise less there it is to me a more couples/ family place. We don’t go out in the evening so much on Antigua. I am sure that someone will be able to reassure you, but l am not familiar with the attitudes there. I will say the Rex in Barbados, the Discovery Bay might suit you anyway. It’s a 3 star on a 5 star beach.

My partner and I stayed at the St. James Club in Antigua for a week in December and had a great time. I had heard Antigua was extremely unwelcoming to gay travelers while researching, so I called the resort and asked. They seemed very surprised that I had any concerns and said EVERYONE is absolutely welcome, so we went. It was absolutely beautiful, there were accommodating, and everyone was very, very nice. Now I’m not sure if it makes a difference, but we do not hold hands, or show any other forms of PDA. That said, we loved it and have talked about going back.

I was just researching Hawksbill Resort because they have the only clothing optional beach on Antigua, and I’m not sure if they are gay friendly. I haven’t called them yet, but plan to.

We saw quite a few gay couples, both male and female. No one paid them any mind. You will be fine!!

For the first time this year we saw a gay couple walking along holding hands. In past years when people have asked this same question, the fact that Antiguan people are fairly conservative and generally religious has come up. So, it was quite surprising and heartwarming to see that nobody was batting an eyelid!

Bearing in mind the above, I am sure you will have no problem if you don't make overt PDAs, as I would advise anybody of any sexuality - it's just not that kind of place!

We were deadset on booking our Antigua vacation but chanced upon an article saying that homosexuality there is a crime (!) and people are generally friendly but very conservative (and I suppose homophobic). We're really just planning on sitting by the beach and staying in the resort, I wonder if we'd run into any issues? Would the taxi driver be rude? Would resort staff spit in our drinks??

My partner looks very butch you will not mistake us for being "just friends" even if we avoid PDA. We try to avoid any non-LGBT friendly places (my pink dollars are appreciated elsewhere) but cannot find a place lovelier. On the fence now, considering St Maartin or Curacao maybe. Appreciate any insight from lesbian couples who've been there recently. Thanks!

Thanks Helen! Do you explore the island or just stay in the resort mostly?

Having lived in Antigua, I can confirm the country as a whole, can be unwelcoming. Fortunately for travelers, they are a tourist driven industry, and you are unlikely to have any issues while at the resort. The employees are generally understanding, or willing to put their beliefs aside during work. You will enjoy Antigua!

Sadly, the country, as a whole is overwhelmingly not accepting. The majority of issues are between Antiguans, but still creates fear for many potential tourists.
