Need a Guide and Driver in Havana and Tips While There

Hello All!

My wife and I will be traveling to Havana from 8/1 to 8/7 for the first time. Looking for a great guide and driver. Not looking to join group tours. Looking to explore the city for great cuisine, bars, and nightlife. If you have contacts in Havana, all information would be appreciated.

Looking forward to your responses.

Thank you

Why are you looking for a guide and a driver? Are you looking for someone just to show you around the city or to drive you to other destinations? If you are planning on staying in Havana for your trip, there is no need to hire a driver. With a good guidebook (or further internet research) Havana is an easy city to self navigate and walking is the best way to see it, if you and your wife are in good health. You will find tons of restaurants, bars and nightlife. Many different types of cuisine and various styles of music. You can find lots of recommendations on this forum or discover them on your own. Don't plan too much in advance. Go with the flow. Where are you staying?

Aaron,

Hola, as i mentioned on a different thread, Parque Central in Old Havana is full of guides and drivers awaiting to take you for a complete city tour. Pick a driver, and car you get a good vibe with, and hire them. Many will have '' menus '' for you to look at, and decide how long you want to be driven around, and agree on a price. They are very reasonable.....

Then probably the best deal in the city, the hop on hop off bus. For just $ 10,00 for all day, you can jump on and off at your desire, to explore all the sites. This should include must sees, like the Hotel Nacional, Colon Cemetery, John Lennon parque, Plaza de Revelution, etc.

Also, if you are determined to hire a private driver and guide, if you are on Facebook, join the forum '' Americans traveling to Cuba ''... ask this question and you willl be bombarded with responses.

Last but certainly not least, check out Strawberry Tours Havana. This local group is rated #1 of tours and activities in Havana on Trip advsor. They are excellent, and give a choice of a variety of free walking tours. ( all they suggest is to tip your guide what you want after the tour )...... They have many choices which include a Historical tour, ( highly recommend ). Revolution tour, food tour, nightlife tour , even just recently added, Colon cemetery tour... ( fascinating for sure ) . I will add a link, then go to their website. You can pre book a tour then add more of their tours if you enjoy when you are there. Heck, you could take a free different tour each day !! :) Hope this helps, do not hesitate any more questions before you go...

Be aware it is going to be searing hot in August..do not forget the sunscreen !

Thank you both for the information.

We are staying at Angel, which is a casa particular.

As far as a driver, we looking to hire some one to pick us up from the airport, drive us around for a bit, then to take a day trip to Vinales on a different day.

Thanks again for the feedback…. Looking forward to the trip!

Aaron, apology for an unrelated question. Can you tell how you got a visa and found an accommodation in Havana? There are tons of web based recommendations, from getting a visa stamped at the flight connection desk in Tampa, to ordering it in advance. I will appreciate any practical advice.

#3 Ask your casa host if they can arrange a taxi for airport pick-up. More than likely this driver can help with all your needs. Most casa hosts are happy to arrange an airport taxi for you.

We found the place through airbnb. I was aware of kiosks at the airport for the visas, but was too worried that something would go wrong. We purchacd through a 3rd party an have already received them.

Here is a good link to purchase your Visa in advance. Make sure to select "In support of the Cuban People" as the drop down category of travel when booking your flight. This is the best way to travel legally to Cuba. That would be what you’d reference on your visa as well.

Hope this helps.

@6 Obtaining the Tourist Card at departing US airports is a piece of cake. Absolutely no need to go through an additional 3rd party. Takes seconds.

Undecided yet, probably around November. I was told it is not that hot there in November.
