Please advise me on Cuban Tourist Card/Visa

Hi,

My wife and I need in getting tourist cards.

She is Malaysian while I am SIngaporean.

We intend to stay in Cuba for about 10 days.

We are flying to Havana from Singapore (singapore airline) via Barcelona (Iberia).

The purchase of the Singapore air and Iberia air tickets are separate so Singapore Airline cannot help with the Cuban Tourist card.

And I could not call through Iberia's hotline to check either.

There are no cuban consular services in Singapore.

Our stop in Barcelona is only a few hours so we do not have time to go to

the consulate in Barcelona to get the tourist card.

Can we get it from the Iberia counter in Barcelona airport?

Your advises will be so helpful!

Sincerely,

Teo.

Yes, I am positive it can. I have done it here through postal with the Cuban embassy when I have been to busy (or lazy) to go out there in person.

Just send them an e-mail and ask how to proceed.

Tks Don Tomas!

Those are very valuable information!

Based on your personal experience, may I know:

1) if you have succesfully applied for tourist card by post using photocopy of your passport?

2) if you apply by post using original passport, have you ever had problems getting back your passport by post? I.e. Delay, misplacement, etc?

3) have you ever been offered tourist card on arrival in havana or aware of anyone who had?

Thank you so much again!

Sincerely,

Teo.

Teo, you're welcome.

1.Yes, using photocopy. On two occasions. Not complicated, no problems.

2. Have not done that.

3. Have not done that.

I can't promise you things run as smooth every where. Knowing how things IN Cuba will change from one day to another and from one town to another, I sure can't promise that they are following the exact same rules and procedures in the Cuban embassy in Djakarta as they do in Copenhagen.

I would just mail them and ask them how to proceed. It should not be complicated at all.

You can buy the Cuban Tourist Cards direct from Travelplan in Barcelona or Madrid Airports in 5 minutes. The price is a total rip-off at 54€ but I think it's your simplest solution.

Good luck.

By the way, they're open 7:00am to 9:00pm on weekdays and 8:00am to 8:00pm on weekends, closed over the lunch hour.

Have fun.

Cheers,

Thank my friends!

especially to Don Thomas..

we've corresponded with the Ambassador.

Itz 50 euros excluding courier fees - kinda expensive.

We are weighing our options of getting it in the Barca airport or from jarkata.

Thanks again for all the info!

and yes that lovely caney from lonely planet..

Hi, I have came back home and I just want to share what happened in end.

I DHL my passport copies to the Cuban embassy in Jakarta (Indonesia) for which they received.

The problem was the fees.

I wired 100 euros over about 8 days before I need to leave for Cuba but it turned out that was not sufficient enough time for the banks to complete the transfer.

The Ambassador rejected my appeal to grant us our visa in principle and good faith - he was adamant that the money be IN his account before releasing the visas.

And so I was to make an impromptu flight to Jakarta to pay another 100 euros in person to secure our visa.

In total I had spent about 450 euros just to secure our visas.

And upon arrival in Havana airport, I learnt that my wife, a Malaysian, is entitled to the free visa-on-arrival.

All in all a rather vexing experience in getting the Cuban visa for this Singaporean.

But that said.. Cuba is definitely worth it. :)
