Changing Canadian currency ?

Will be staying at Melia las Americas, what do they charge for exchanging Canadian currency ? Some one posted that it is the same fee as at the CADECA at the airport. Another post said that the front desk does not always have a supply of smaller bills. Is there an exchange rate posted ? What is a reasonable additional fee ? Is there a bank in The Plaza of the Americas ? I have also read here, to carefully count money exchanged ?

Thanks for any advice, or relating any personal experiences.

Only you can decide what is reasonable for you.

It seems that many visitors are willing to lose 10% more on the exchange than they need to. I wouldn't regard that as reasonable.

Check the actual bank rate just before you leave so that you can compare.

Use the Bank at Plaza Las America's you will get a better rate for sure as many resorts will give you around $5 CUC less out of $100 Canadian then the Bank .

I completely agree with gat0 as the exchange rate at some resorts can be quite a bit below the official exchange rate, especially if the resort only has a front desk exchange.

no 3 - have you been to that hotel ?

Many hotels seem to be giving 70 CUC to the CAD 100 when it should be 77. Is 7 CUC minimal to you ?

It may seem a bit high to you but that is what a lot of resorts are doing .

Last October resort we stayed it was $5 CUC less out of a $100 no thank you I use the Bank in Downtown or Cadeca when going to Cardenas and both have the same exchange rate not like the rip off resorts .

We just got back at the resort we were in it was quite reasonable. Only two CUC'S less than the bank for a hundred CAD. But I agree when you start getting up to five CUC less at trip to bank would be worth it. Supply and demand if everyone went to the bank perhaps the resort would lower there take a bit and give you a better rate.

We just came back from Cayo Santa Maria and the currency exchange office at the Santa Clara airport had the best exchange rate. Safe travel and enjoy.
