What area to stay in DR that is NOT an all-inclusive area

We are looking at going to the Dominican Republic next winter, ideally over some of the holidays. We really prefer not to do the all-inclusive thing. Ideally, we would find a vacation rental within walking distance to a beach and a town that has some decent restaurants and bars and shopping.

What area of DR seems to fit that request the best?

Thanks for any suggestions!

Bayahibe on the south coast, Caberete/Sosua on the north or Las Terrenas on the Samana peninsula would be my choices. Samana is a bit of a hassle to get to from the US, the other two areas are convenient to fly into Puerta Plata or La Romana.

Cabarete is very nice. We have rented condos there. This year we are renting a condo in Punta Cana. In Los Corales near Bavaro beach.

Cabarete is what you are looking for. Lots of hotels and condos to rent that are either right in town or a short walk along the beach to town. The beach in town is lined wtih restaurants, bars, clubs and shops. Great beach, great food and great night life.
