No real cigar factories around Puerto Plata...

Best arranged in the Cibao Valley around Santiago. Combine it with other activities and make a day of it. Contact Martin Espinal of Isaira Tours www.isairatours.com at espinal30@msn.com and tell him Gregg sent you.

Hi yes there is a cigar factory in Puerto Plata, unless it has closed since I was there just over a year ago.!

Speak to Isaira tours who will be able to arrange the "City Tour" that takes you to the Amber factory, Larimar Factory which is joined to the Cigar factory and the Brugal Rum Factory.

You also go to see the fort and also can do the trip up the mountain.

It was a great day and Isaira tours are excellent.

Hope you have fun.

Cheers

There is a guy at the Ambar Gallery who rolls cigars (if that's what you mean) but it's a far cry from a factory, IMHO.

The Cibao is the center of the Dominican tobacco industry.

If you want to see a real & very good cigar factory, make arrangements with Martin at Isaira Tours www.isairatours.com for a day trip to Santiago. The Centro Leon is a cigar factory that has been in business for over 100 years & is family owned & operated.

Also in this tour is a stop at the Monument to the Heroes of Restoration (in remembrance of the Independence Restoration War of 1863, in which the Dominican Republic regained its independence from Spain.), a visit to a ceramics factory & some shopping in downtown Santiago.

This was a most excellent way to put in a day & learn more about the country. And you drive thru some of the most beautiful mountain scenery that I've ever been a witness to!!

btw...if you do this tour, make sure that you take Dominican currency & not US$$...we had an embarrassing moment while shopping in Santiago!

While Centro Leon is owned by Grupo Leon which make many of the best Dominican cigars and there is a cigar making display there, it is not a cigar factory. Centro Leon is a cultural and artistic center financed by Grupo Leon.

Most of the larger and best cigar factories are found in the Tax Free Zones (Zonas Franca) around Santiago as almost all of their best production is pre-sold each year and is exported.
