This just came up the other day. I think its about 5 hours for the trip.
Someone said it would be easier to fly there.
We drove from Cabarette to Las Terrenas. If you are used to driving in the DR, not really a big deal. The topography going over the mountain was at times somewhat extreme, just take your time and be cautious parts of that road are narrow and alot of blind curves. The scenery was well worth it. I will tell you this, I hope your spanish is up to par, because in Las Terrenas there are less people that speak any english. If you speak French you should be OK too...
It is much easier and shorter from Cabarete then from PC
From PC it will be 5-6 long hours. Remember here there are no rules of the road and those laws that do exist are for the most part ignored. So expect anything from the other dirvers including drivning on the wrong side of the road, passing in stupid spots, no lights at night, turning from the wrong lane at any time, ignoring stop signs and lights as well as other sinage. Basically it can be a free for all. Also remember if you are going to rent a car make sure it has full insurance and do not rely on your credit card coverage or your home insurance as many times this will not work here. Credit cards will not cover liability.
Also make sure you insuance that you get includes "casa de Conductore" Here in the DR if you are in a major accident or one that causes inuries all parteis are put in jail until it can be sorted out. This may take a couple of days. With the casa conductore you are put into a hotel (usually in Santo Domingo or Santiago) under house arrest until it is worked out. There will also be folks from the insurance company at these hotels that can help you.
Having said all that I would not reccomend that tourits drive here.
Agree with Bob. You will basically spend a day to get there and one to return so unless your vacation is an extended one not worth it IMO.
