The biggest difference:

Ambar is adult-only. Esmeralda is family-friendly.

They are not next to each other. Here is a link to a resort map to help you visualize location within the huge Gran Bahia complex. Click on it to enlarge it. The Ambar is on the very top, the Esmeralda on the bottom. There is new construction being completed at the Esmeralda which is not shown yet on that map. When completed, they will accomodate about the same number of guests.

resortsmaps.com/map-GranBahiaPrincipeAmbar-P…

They both have identical services and accessibility to the central entertainment complex, Pueblo Principe, and the other on-site sections and most of their a la cartes. Guests staying at the Ambar and Esmeralda can utilize each others a la cartes but not their main buffets, but Esmeralda guests must be over age 18 to frequent the Ambar.

They are both located about the same distance from the ocean and do each have a small, guest-exclusive private beach area just in front of their pools deck areas as well.

Fellow destination expert Brooklin will post much more information for you here as well.

We stayed at the Ambar last March. It is adults only, the Esmeralda is not. They are both part of a very large resort complex consisting of Ambar, Esmeralda and Punta Cana.Trams get you where you want to go quickly and conveniently. If you stay at the Ambar you will have the use of the other two facilities. The Ambar has it's own adult beach, pool and restaurants. If you are traveling without children, the Ambar is a better choice since the other two resorts are family oriented and very busy and noisy.

We had a great time at the Ambar. It is very clean, good food, great pool and beach. There is plenty of nightly entertainment, shows, etc.

We are considering returning this coming spring.

I hope this helps.

stewartNewfoundland...

I am pasting a recent post explaining the differences amongst the 5 different Bahia resorts in Punta Cana that may also assist you. I realize it is more than you were looking for, but I do hope it does add to the excellent information provided by "Travelpro198" and "Ken100" above.

Others may benefit from this as well, so I hope you do not mind.

The Bahia resort complex in Punta Cana actually consists of 5 different resorts - all of which are 5 star resorts. It is the largest resort complex in Punta Cana with a total of 2,904 rooms on one property - soon to be 3,114 with the current expansion of the Esmeralda by approx mid December 2012 - numerous daily activities with a large shopping and entertainment area on site which is exclusive to Bahia guests only.

Each resort has it's own lobby/check in, lobby bar, gourmet a la carte and main buffet.

Lets start with the Bahia Principe Bavaro resort - 864 rooms - a family resort

- lobby is shown on the map as the pink #1 - guest rooms are the white numbers 21-39 and 71-79

The Bahia Principe Punta Cana resort - 708 rooms - a family resort

- lobby is shown on the map as the yellow #1 - guest rooms are building numbers 1-19.

Each of these two resorts have their own upgrades - the Bavaro resort has an upgrade referred to as Club Diamond or as some tour operators will name it, Club Hacienda - these are room numbers 25-29.

The Punta Cana resort has it's upgrade called Club Golden - these are room numbers 1-8 and 20-24 - as you can see, the primary difference is the location to the beach, and there are some other benefits which are for another discussion.

Both of these resorts are basically a mirror image of each other - all guest rooms are identical - the guest room buildings are primarily 3 stories in height with a few that are 2 stories in height. They share all amenities including the pools - map blue #4,#18 & #22.

Lets continue with the different Bahia resorts:

The Bahia Principe Bavaro- Premier - 504 rooms - a family resort

- lobby is shown on map as the orange #1- guests rooms are building numbers 40-53. This resort is the furthest from the beach but is like a resort within a resort - very quaint and is available through selected tour operators.

The Luxury Bahia Principe Ambar resort - 528 rooms - adult only

- lobby is shown on the map as a beige #2 -

It offers all top end services the Bahia has to offer, including a larger selection of liquors, butler service, waiter service at the beach and pool, pillow menu, room safe included in price, private beach area directly in front of it's main beach pool and room service 24/7. No other guests may use the services of the Ambar other than guests at the next resort I will mention, which is the Luxury Bahia Principe Esmeralda - and they may only do so provided they do not have children under 18 years of age with them.

Guests of the Ambar and the Esmeralda may use all of the facilities at the other resorts with the exception of their gourmet a la cartes and main lobby buffets - that provides them a total of 8 pools to use including their own, throughout all of the Bahia resorts.

The Luxury Bahia Principe Esmeralda - presently 304 rooms and expanding to 510 rooms by mid December 2012 - a family resort with the same Top End Services as I mentioned above for the Ambar resort including the private beach area directly in front of their beach pool.

The rooms at the Ambar and the Esmeralda all have 4 poster canopy beds and a slightly different large private washroom layout.

All resorts share the large shopping and entertainment area called the Pueblo Principe (map blue #14) which houses the Casino (drinks are extra there as it is not owned by the resort), disco, smoke shop, kareoke and sports bar, patio lounge, many clothing, gift and jewellery shops, internet shop, local vendors with their wares an outdoor stage where a house band and audience participation nights are often held each evening. They also all share the large Tropicana Theatre (map blue #1) where the big nightly shows are held - two performances nightly - one performance at 9pm and the other at 10:15pm. They are presently constructing an "Aquatic Park" (Water Park) just above room buildings 52 & 53 at the Bavaro-Premier resort, which will have a themed pool with many different games - strictly for guests at all of the Bahia resorts.

Every pool throughout all resorts have swim up bars as well.

The Bahia resort complex has a very efficient tram system, should guests wish to use it, that operates 21.5 hours per day, but I can tell you that one can walk from the Bavaro lobby buffet (map pink #6) to the large beach pool (blue #22) in less than 10 minutes, from personal experience.

I hope this does assist you.

stewartNewfoundland...

Just so that you are aware - here is the criteria for advising the Bahia in Punta Cana about any previous visits for guests at the Ambar or Esmeralda resorts:.

"VIP Status"

For the Luxury Ambar resort:

- guests at the Ambar who have been a guest more than three times at the Luxury Bahia Ambar resort only, will receive the VIP "black wristband". - so on their 4th visit to the Ambar, they would receive the "Black wristband.

Repeat guests who have been at any of the other Bahia resorts, anywhere, on any given number of times, are given "special amenities" upon arrival as gratitude for their repeat business, but not the black wristband.

For the Luxury Bahia Esmeralda:

- VIP status for guests of the Esmeralda is substantially different - they will receive the "Black wristband" if they have been a guest at the Esmeralda only, on 5 previous occasions - so on their 6th visit to the Esmeralda, they would receive the VIP 'black wristband".

In all cases, the guest should email Albania Batista no sooner than 7-10 days prior their arrival - provide her your names, booking number, tour operator, date of arrival and dates/locations of the previous Bahia visits. Albania will put a note in the guests file to ensure they do receive the appropriate VIP status - this must be done prior to arrival, not on arrival.

Here is Albania's email address:

asistenteventasbppuj@bahia-principe.com

I hope this does help.

8. Re: difference between esmerelda and ambar

There are many off-site excursions you can purchase from the activity kiosk at the resort and also from those vendors that roam the beach. Choose those that pique your interest, but in general, Punta Cana is more of a relaxing and low-key beach-type destination.

9. Re: difference between esmerelda and ambar

low key and relaxing is what we are looking for.

but we would be looking for cultural/historical sites to check out

we aren't in to parasailing jet skiis or high adventure stuff.

is there snorkeling from the beach???

we did a ton of that in mexico and are in to doing some of that

thanks again

Punta Cana is not know for many great snorkeling opportunities directly off the beach, including the Gran Bahia complex. Snorkel excursions are your best bet.

La Basilica de Higüey is one of the most respected monuments of the Dominican Republic. It is located in on the main street of the province of Salva Leon de Higüey, about an hour from the Punta Cana resorts.

Then there are the many historical & cultural sites in the capitol city of Santo Domingo, about 3 1/2 hours away.
