Extremely rare. I read that only 2 have actually hit Punta Cana in 100 years, the last one being about 10 years ago. You may be affected by passing hurricanes or tropical storms, which may cause a couple of days of not so great weather. That happened to me once in 25+ trips, and that was in December. No big deal. Great weather the rest of the trip.

I've been in August a few times and only a couple of times and have only encountered the affects of a passing hurricane or tropical storm, lasted a day and then pure sunshine and blue skys by the next day.

Yes flip_flop, for sure :)

We've been to PC in August and had beautiful weather. A couple of very brief little showers, and one night of hard rain for a couple of hours - the rest of the week was gorgeous and sunny, although very humid. Even if no tropical storms/depressions are reported for the area, the forecasts will always show a mid to high percentage chance of rain everyday - ignore that. It's a tropical climate so they will always show this "chance" - rain in one area does not necessarily mean rain in another, and the showers could be very brief, usually early morning or through the night.

We are going in July this time, and have no qualms about booking during the summer :)

while Stormy Formations of different powers(Tropical Depressions, Tropical Storms, Hurricanes etc) are common during august-mid october for the Tropical Atlantic, Caribbean Sea and Gulf of Mexico, Punta Cana as a specific location is a well known safe heaven, as hits of any Storms are very very rare, hence Punta Cana counts towards the lowest risk areas in case of Hurricanes to be concerned.

of course once every several decades someone can hit the lottery jackpot, there's no guarantee, but i would not discard august due fear of hurricane hits.

for most part our summer weather conditions(Hurricane season june-november) are much smoother than the conditions during our winter months(no hurricane season, end november-mid february).

happy travels

PC basically doesn't get hit by hurricanes but vacationers can snag a rainy week while hurricanes are in the areas around the DR.

Just like when FL gets socked by a hurricane and we in Pittsburgh get rainy weather afterwards as an effect of those storms that time of year.

Or you could get lucky and get a sunny week.

Or only rain storms at night.

Or any other combination.

And what happened last year doesn't mean it will be the same in the coming year.

You go for the "hurricane season" booking, you take your chances.

Of course you take your chances any time.

And with the various changes in recent weather patterns, forecasting is a tough game!
