pay in gourdes when paying small amounts - if you have a credit card, use that for hotel and large expenses.

US $ are useful, but you will get change in gourdes, and many vendors may not be able to break anything larger than a 5$ if that.. maybe change $20 at border, then more at hotel or in Cap Haitian.

The prices are quoted in dollars for the convenience of those reading the guide. Be aware the gourde is about or just over 50 to the dollar. also be aware there is a 3rd (but not tangible) currency - the Haitian dollar - 5 gourdes = 1 Haitian dollar. You may hear people refer to something as ten dollars, or whatever - likely means Haitian dollars. Ask if you aren't sure - you will get confused and pay too much - although folks are generally honest about it.

dollars are better because you know how much you are actually paying. however, go on the internet and get the conversion rate and write them down in a notebook. be careful with taxi drivers and try to get one through your hotel.
