Quality and affordable tour options?

Hi guys

I'm planning to visit Cap Haitien with a group of friends who are foreigners and who are very excited to see the sites Haiti has to offer. I'd like to spend at least a day visiting the beautiful surrounding islands by boat and really want to prioritise using a local provider so that our money helps improve local industry.

Does anyone know of any local tour operators who can do pick ups from the local water taxi station? As I'm responsible for my visitors I need to be sure it's a reliable service and someone who can give us a great day out on the water!

Thanks!

Considering Hurricane Mathew is likely to wipe out a good portion of Haiti today and tomorrow tours are not uppermost in thought.

Thanks for your response. I'm actually currently living in Haiti, Port au Prince specifically, so am very well aware of the terrible Hurricane Mathew afoot. Those of us fortunate enough to be able to are in lockdown at home for the next few days. We will then be mobilised in any way that might help our local communities who have been affected.

The fact that a Hurricane is occurring will not change my friends' upcoming travel plans. In the aftermath of any sort of disaster it is crucial to keep money flowing in to local industry, including tourism. The tsunami of 2004 in Thailand is a good example of this where most of the local hardship experienced was in fact due to the lack of tourism traffic that followed, not the effects of the tsunami itself.

Any responses in regards to the original question of boat tour guides would be much appreciated, thanks!

The country, although small, is not going to be wiped out. Cap Haitien is not in the path of the storm, although the south west is. And tourism is a critical part of the economy.

Some great options above for more formal tours.

Another one to look at is from Comier Plage Hotel (just before you get to the cruise ship Labadee area), this one to Amiga Island looks pretty great though I've never taken it personally I think they would have a pretty nice fancy boat if you have the $$

http://cormierhaiti.com/amiga/

For something on the cheaper side, I've had the fortune of being introduced to a local English (Spanish, French and Creole) speaking boat guide.

Gito +509.3173.8384

Gito lives in Labadee Village with his wife Claudine and their three small kids. He loves the area and knows where to take you for a fun day out.

He has a little taxi boat that is powerful enough to run around the area for the day. He has an assistant who sometimes drives the boat too. They can help you arrange lobster or fish to be cooked on the island.

We paid $50 for the day, plus a tip.

9.30am - 4pm

(we also shared our lunch, as there isn't much out there otherwise and they'd helped us arrange it all)

Ask for Amiga Island, also known as Ile à rat

(more pictures here - http://www.traveladventures.org/continents/americas/ile-a-rats-paradis.html)

Cadras is also a really lovely secluded beach area hidden away from the cruise ship area.

There is a "beach" in the middle of the ocean that if you are lucky you might pass by... it's a sand bar that comes up with the tides. We had a great swim there for a bit.

Gito also knows some snorkeling places if you ask, we were happy to snorkel just off Amiga ourselves.

And if you are looking for an overnight check out Norm's Place too, really lovely place about a 10 minute walk to the village and 15 minutes boat to Cadras. About 45 minutes to Amiga Island.

$40 per person includes breakfast (per person, not room rate)

Hard to book, and if arrive after 3 pm you might miss the deadline for booking dinner - but head over to the village for Haitian food or ask someone there to arrange delivery of plates from another place.

Or call Gito and ask him to buy something for you and deliver - did this a couple of times in the rain one trip when we didn't want to leave the guesthouse! A nice tip was worth it for us to keep drinking prestige.

Also, a great price for a taxi from Cap Haitian out to the local boat dock is 750HTG, but standard seems to be 1000HTG (not the tourist ones, just a regular car one).

Have a great time - it's really beautiful!!

Thanks for all this wonderful info Jeni! The price you paid Gito for the boat for the day was $50USD per person, or total?

Hey there! I couldn't help but read your post as I am perusing this forum and I noticed that you are currently living in Port-Au-Prince? Can I ask some advice? I am planning a volunteer trip to Hinche for two weeks (Oct14-29) and am just wanting to know the stability of the airport. I have an obligation the following Tues, Nov 1, that I really cannot miss! So I'm deciding if I should take my chances and go down to Haiti, change my plans to come home earlier. I just can't afford to get stuck in Haiti. Can you speak to the conditions at PAP? Are flights frequently delayed? Are flights still going out? I think the hurricane has passed from what I can tell, but just didn't know what it's really like down there. Thanks in advance for your help!

Sarah
