We just got back from St. Barths and here are a few tips:

The roads are about the width of an american driveway (single car driveway). It is a mountainous island so there are steep hills and winding curvy roads. There is traffic and quite a bit of road repair/wall building going on so just watch out. Most people drive fast and several don't stop at intersections. My husband loved it and thought he was driving on a go-cart track all week.

You definitely need a car to enjoy the island.

Oh yeah, I forgot to mention the roads also. The previous post has described it well.

"Most people drive fast and several don't stop at intersections."

A particularity of the French highway code.

People merging from the left have priority except on roundabouts and where marked otherwise.

As such, for example, you are leaving Gustavia by the "top road" even though you are on what appears to be the main straight road out of town, you must stop at the intersections where people are coming in from the left.
