self-guided drive

Will be visiting Nevis in October and will have a car. Can anyone guide me to a suggested self-guided itinerary for a day drive around the island? Would love to stop and see some of the resorts on the island for future trip planning if this is allowed. Also, interested in visiting any schools if it is possible. Which beaches will have access to chairs and umbrellas?

Your car rental company will give you a map with all the major points of interest clearly shown. Simply begin driving either clockwise or counter-clockwise along the Main Island Road stopping at those points of interest that appeal to you. There is only one Main Road that circumvents the island so keep driving in the direction you choose and you'll end up back at your starting point. Most of the resorts are on the Main Road. Those few Plantation Inns that aren't have signs where you can turn off the Main Road to get to the Inn. Simply retrace your steps to get back to the Main Island Road. Hint: If you get disoriented when taking secondary roads remember that any paved road will eventually lead you back to the Main Road. Second HINT: Go to Goole Maps and bring up Nevis. You can get a head start on your research as the Main Road is clearly shown as are a lot of the restaurants and major points of interest. Do a little pre-trip studying and you'll have a route of march outlined in your mind before you arrive on the island.

Beaches where you can rent chairs and umbrellas are Pinney's Beach (just south of the Four Seasons), by Yachtsman's Grill at the Hamilton Condos, at Chrishi beach Restaurant on Cades Bay next to the Seabridge Car Ferry Dock (the latter 2 places will let you use their chairs and umbrellas free of charge if you have lunch or drinks).

And yes, most resorts will let you visit their respective properties but you can't use their facilities unless you are willing to pay for a "day pass". Best to check in with the Front desk to let them know you want to look around. FYI - It's difficult to get past the Security Guard Shack at Four Seasons unless you are a paying guest, have a tee-time for golf or having lunch or dinner at one of their restaurants.

Hello, we have been living on Nevis for about eight months now, it is a beautiful place. We met a wonderful woman here, Pam Barry. She has been on island for 50 years, she has quite a family history going back to 1680. She was part owner of the Golden Rock hotel for many many years. She offers a variety of personal tours of the island. She has a website www.findingnevis.com . The site is fairly new and is being updated frequently. She has her tour descriptions and other information there. Well worth checking out.
