Half Moon Cay Excursions?

I'll be heading to Half Moon Cay in March. Does anyone recommend any good excurions?

Is there good snorkeling by the beach? Would anyone recommend the snorkeling tour?

I thought this was strictly a cruise ship island? I just returned from it and highly recommend not going. There is nothing there except not enough lounge chairs and overpriced cocktails. It felt like cattle being herded on and off the island. Save the day and don't go!

I would tend to agree with this assessment of Half Moon. The island is practically a marine and bird preserve that has 3000 plus people being herded on it every few days. Stay on the boat and the wildlife will thank you (as will your wallet with the overpriced drinks)

While staying on the ship might appeal to those wanting pool space or 1/2 price at the spa, do consider a tour on mainland Eleuthera. The island is a gem of incredible sights as well as places of historical and cultural significance. A much better way to spend the day! I guaratnee that Eleuthera will become your favourite port visit -- unless you have your heart set on shopping malls and casinos, none of which you will find there.

I sort of have to disagree with the previous reviewers, from this perspective. While I chose to not book any excursions, I considered two of them - swimming with the stingrays for approx. $30.00 for 75 minutes (reasonable) or riding a horse while it swims in the ocean, roughly $80 - $100 (too high, in my humble opinion). Instead I simply spent the day on the beach.

Now, that beach is as nice as I have ever visited - simply gorgeous! As nice or arguably better than Grand Turk, even, in my humble opinion. White sand, water as clear as glass. It IS a beach day - I would concur. BUT not one to be missed, for sure. Drinks are high - I agree. They come in (what else)? a souvenir container, i.e., a monkey's head. That was $15.00. You unscrew it and there is a cup inside with your drink, though you obviously drink thru a straw. I passed despite a little bit of pressure to buy one...

I cannot speak to Eleuthera, nor do I believe that from a cruise it is easy to get to??? I saw NOTHING about it on my very recent cruise?

Thus, excursions are minimal - true. But the island itself is DEFINITELY worth spending a beach day - it cost me nothing. It was hot as Hades so sunscreen, hat, water are all required. Photography is great. The cruise ship provided a lovely buffet, I walked the island a bit - but the beach is unquestionably worth experiencing - trust me.

Addendum: I am not a diver, and don't snorkel much either. However, my understanding is that both are very, very good at Half Moon Cay. Investigate it further, for sure. That probably would be the most popular 'excursion.' I cannot speak to prices? Also, there was / is para-sailing for those so inclined - again, check for prices. Bottom line: Half Moon Cay is about the beach. Don't stay on the ship. At the very least go to the beach - it is truly spectacular! And bring your camera. Hope the above posts help...

Is the snorkeling here better than Nassau or Freeport?

The cruise stop on Eleuthera is called Princess Cays. Cruisers are led to believe that it is a private island when in fact it's a fenced off area on the southern tip of a 110 mile long skinny BEAUTIFUL island - our favorite. The last I heard, Eleuthera Tours can no longer accomodate cruise passengers due to the time constraints so skip the cruise and book a flight to Nassau and then a local carrier to one of 3 airports on Eleuthera and go out with Eleuthera Tours. It was the highlight of our trip last year!

I just returned from a cruise which stopped at Half Moon Cay on the last day. Yes, it's all cruisers, but the food is complimentary for them and the drinks are priced the same as on the ships. The beach is beautiful and crowded near the entrance, but we walked down to the far end and had plenty of room and empty chairs. Don't plan on snorkeling here, as it is all sand and no coral. owever, the sand was the softest we experienced on the entire cruise through eastern and southern Caribbean.

We chose the Water Trek Adventure Tour aka jet skis. This was the most fun we have ever had on jet skis, as it started off in a lagoon with a guide ski. As the guide assessed our individual skill level, he led the three of us advanced jet skiers on a fast, rough, and exhilarating experience, leaving the lagoon and going out into the open sea. Here is where we were able to jump waves and really experience what the skis could do. I highly recommend this activity!

Half Moon Cay IS the beach. It is a private island owned by Holland ( Carnival) and is simply gorgeous. It is, as noted, VERY HOT. There is no specific beach - Half Moon Cay is it. Get on the island as quickly as possible! I just got back this past May, 2013 and it was as nice as ever - we had a lovely beach day. We rented a cabana - expensive (!) but worth it if doable - not many available. Otherwise find some shade and camp out. Be sure to bring water, hat, sandals, sunscreen, camera, possible a shirt that has an SPF built in? I would return in a heartbeat as having been to most of the 'name' beaches throughout the Caribbean, few if any are 'nicer' than Half Moon Cay - in my humble opinion. The place is plush! You will love it! If I can help in any other way, please do not hesitate to write back. I would write a full review with photos if TripAdvisor would allow it for this incredible little island - but they don't so this is the best that I can do. But happy to answer any / all questions so write back if desired...
