This problem has mostly been solved with upgrade of treatment plant. In any evident this has always been a rainy season problem which is not at this time.

If you are still concerned you might consider Barra de Potosi a most charming village near the airport on the open coast. Also North of Zihua is Troncones. Ixtapa it's self is also on the open ocean.

You should have no concerns. Come on down and enjoy another day in paradise. Troncones and Barra are great places but very small and isolated.

You should have no concerns with safety as the area is very safe. Just use normal precautions. Take a look to the top right hand corner of this page for Top Questions. Lot's of other good information.

We have encountered foul odors from the canal and while on the bay even since most of these replies were written. Zihua has been a special place in our family for many years, but we will not be going back.

If you have in fact been going to Zihua for years, then you would be aware that the water quality is as good or better know than in previous years. What brought you back after your first visit when it wasn't as good as it is now or are you just here trolling?

Sure looks like a troll as this is their first post on the area and only the 5th post in almost 6 years.

Sometimes red tides and other algae blooms are mistaken for pollution. If a red tide is in effect, you will see it up and down the coast, even at open water beaches. You should avoid the water when there is a red tide. Natural toxins can pollute the water (not man-made!)

As previously stated, the bay is cleaner than it has been in years. I swam every day for two weeks in the bay, went snorkeling at Playa Manzanillo and in the water at La Barra. Fantastic!

I would stay out of the bay or away from any rivers or canals after a large rainstorm, however. The runoff from the hills can be nasty. This is not a problem unique to Zihua.

As mizsic states pollution can happen anywhere. One of the most polluted waters in the US is San Pueblo Bay which is the Northern third of San Francisco Bay.
