We took a friend of ours down with us in Dec. who had a felony on his record (pretty much same charges as yours) and he had NO issues at all getting into Mexico.

contact the consulate prior to attempting to cross. some countries require permission for felons and with these circumstances you should not have issues getting it. You want to have a record with the US that you are crossing. Remember that you are doing nothing wrong and have nothing to hide, this is for your own protection as a US citizen. Be honest and straightforward.

I strongly recommend going about it like this because while it is very unlikely that you will have any issues, you are "better safe than sorry" so to speak.

If you have a passport, and your not on the no-fly list, have a great time in Mexico.!!

Yes master is correct. If the USA gives you an ok to get a passport then you can travel where ever you want. Some felonies with a long record will be turned down for a passport and can't travel. So if you get a passport no problem they are not going to check out you criminal record coming into the country.

Hi Sonnyj,

Just FYI, it's not really accurate that if you can get a passport you can also travel into wherever. For instance, Canada has pretty strict rules about who can come in, and even things on one's driving record can get one barred from entry. Do they check every traveller? No. But if/when they do and find any issues they will deny you entry. (I know Canada specifically because of some other research I was doing on TA in the Niagara Falls forum a couple of years ago.)

However, from what folks have said re: Mexico, it sounds as though Brookeejames will be okay.

awetum is right. It is absolutely not true that "if you can obtain a passport you can travel wherever you want". Many countries require visas and others will deny entry for a variety of reasons. Canada is a good example because many Americans are unaware of their laws governing entrance. Canada does not allow anyone with a felony conviction to enter without first obtaining permission from the consulate. Same goes for anyone with a DUI conviction within the last decade. Many people do cross into Canada w/o permission, and most of the time they aren't even aware that they are breaking the law, but if found out they will be escorted to the border and asked to leave in the best case scenario. Mexico is not so strict but it is in one's best interest to do your research beforehand.

If it were me, I would apply for a visa before traveling. That way you know for sure that you can get in. There would be nothing worse than getting turned around at the aiport. If you apply for a visa then you will know for sure that they will let you in.

My husband (not a felon) has the same name, birthdate as a felon in MN. A different address and social security number. He has had a passport for nearly 20 years (renewed as necessary.)

He has been stopped so many times I cannot tell you. He sometimes has had to go in a "security room" to make certain he is not the "same" person as this other man with the same name and birthdate.

One time he was almost denied access to the flight. The TSA advisor gave him a form to send in so this would not happen again. He filled out the appropriate paperwork and sometimes they still "flag" him.

I know this is different than your situation but I would take the advice of others who have commented. Nothing more frustrating to you and the ones you travel with to be detained.

I am sure everything will be fine. Just take the extra steps to ensure a smooth acceptance.
