Christmas trip to Merida

I am planning a trip Christmas week to Merida with my 2 teenage daughters. My 18 year old is an artist and Art History buff and has requested this trip. I need recommendations for lodging and sights to see while we are there. We want a clean hotel close to the main square with a pool. We love exploring local restaurants but if the hotel had breakfast it would be a plus.

I am also comparing flying from NYC direct to Cancun and driving vs connecting flights to Merida.

How long of a drive to Merida from Cancun?

Any & all suggestions/info is welcome!

TIA!

@TinafromNY -

For ideas about your trip to Merida, take a look at my trip report:

Your description of your desired hotel sounds just like Hotel Casa Lucia. Here's my review of that hotel:

Driving from Cancun to Merida, you're looking at about 3 1/4 to 4 hours, if Google Maps is to be believed.

Indeed, it will be worth your while to scroll through some old posts on this forum. There have been some good trip reports and questions that address the basics.Yucatan Today http://www.yucatantoday.com contains a lot of useful information. A good guidebook will also help. Trip Advisor, itself, does a good job listing hotels and restaurants, complete with reviews. Check out the tabs at the top of this page.

If you wish not to drive from Cancun, there are plenty of buses, which are safe and comfortable. Lots of info on this forum. Google Maps is a great website for getting driving times and routes.

I always recommend VIlla Verde - their breakfasts alone are worth the price of admission and the place is gorgeous. Nice pool too!

Drive from Merida to Cancun or vice versa is 3-4 hours.
