Playa del Carmen to Tulum---Collectivo?!?!?

I was just wondering if taking the collectivo from PDC to Tulum is doable and okay. Is the collectivo safe and will it drop us off near the TULUM beaches/ruins? Thanks for the input... :)

The Collectivos are perfectly safe. They will drop you right at the ruins if you are heading there. However they don't leave the main highway so they don't go to the beaches. They will drop you in town where you can catch a cab for the short ride to the beaches. Then to get back just take a cab from the beach to the main highway and catch the bus heading north.

Super doable and very okay. All you need to know is on the right under Top Questions and Itineraries.

Colectivos stop anywhere along the highway. Will need a taxi to the beach.

After visiting the Tulum ruins you can walk to the beaches. Instead of taking the tram or walking back to the Tulum Ruins parking lot near the main Hwy, you can walk south about a half a mile then at the first chance head east to the beaches. there are several beach clubs along here and they all have numerous taxis available. Take one of the taxis back to Tulum City (50 pesos), ask for the ADO (pronounced ah dee oh) bus station. If a bus isn't ready to leave then walk across the street and you will find a colectivo station along the curb, 1 about every 10 minutes. It will cost about 35 pesos to get back to Playa del Carmen.

we (six of us including two kids) took the colectivo from the colectivo stand in Playa right to the Tulum ruins and then took the back way out of the ruins and walked down the road to the beaches. Very easy- even our little kids didn't complain. After we were done at the beach we grabbed a couple of taxi's into Tulum and then took the colectivo home. Very simple, cheap and fun.

How long does the trip take on average?

joshrocker, how long the trip takes depends on what you are going to do, and where you are coming from. It's about an hour from Playa del Carmen. You can tour the ruins in about an hour with a guide. But if you bring a towel and lay on their beautiful beach below the ruins you could be there for quite awhile. If you walk down the beach and hang out at one of the beach clubs you might be there all day. Maybe you will want to go into Tulum City and eat at one of those restaurants. Colectivos run until about 11 PM.

Thanks for replying oldtraveller. I meant just the trip to the ruins using the collectivo. So about an hour each way? I booked an excursion to Coba but thought we might try to do Tulum on our own since it seemed easier to get to and a whole lot closer.

Give Tulum on your own a try. Then you will gain experience using local transportation. Next you may go to Coba using the ADO bus. Your options improve once you become comfortable with the bus and/or colectivo.

That's kind of what I was thinking CO. I was a littler nervous about getting to Coba since it wasn't direct and I'm not familiar with the bus system. Tulum looked pretty easy to get to by bus or collectivo and it seems very economical.
