Xmas and New Year in Zihua and Ixtapa

Hi, we have booked a condo over Xmas and the New year and are wondering about what kind of festivities there are over this time period. We have spent numerous holidays there but this is the first ever Xmas away from family and friends. Any advice would be apreciated

There are a number of posadas before Xmas...usually around Dec. 10-15 ish...you didn't say when you would be arriving, so this might be too soon. Christmas is a religious and family time. You can go to Mass on the 24th if you like. Beyond that, you might see, also on the 24th, some family fiestas with pinatas for the kids if you stroll through residential neighbourhoods. The 25th is back to work. Of course the children have usually 2 weeks vacation from school at this time. On the beach, there will be many Mexican families who have come for their vacation time from inland locations. Remember that gift giving is normally reserved for Jan. 6- Kings' Day- when the first gifts were given. Modern families will have something for children to have on the 24th- something small...just to be more modern.

Now in the tourist resorts, there may be some special dinners, etc. for the tourists.

We always go to the Posada that happens in the La Madera area. We won't know the date for awhile. If you would like to send me a personal message around Dec. 1 I will be able to tell you the date at that time.

You will also be here for Dec. 12- the feast day of the Virgin of Guadalupe. During the entire week leading up to this date, there will be many processions- people carrying wreaths to the Virgin, candles, singing- all going to one of the churches to have their wreath blessed and then left on display for a few days. You would be welcome to join any procession; just walk behind and go to the church with them.

A Trip to Patzcuaro for Kings Day is a nice break from the beach. I did this 2 years ago getting a room over looking the Plaza Grande. Watching the Fete with literally thousands of kids there receiving gifts from the 3 kings is a sight to behold. New Bikes (from parents) everywhere ridden by happy kids. A most wonderful parade & a great time for all.

PS You definitely want a plaza room With a fireplace as it will be chilly.
