Just going to pop in to say that from other threads, levis is arriving YYC on May 12th.

Levis, I'm not sure why you are still discussing Golden? What is attracting you to that town? IMO, the places you want to spend time will be Banff, Lake Louise and a short section of the Icefields Parkway.

So, you've got less than 2 days to visit Banff and Lake Louise. Well, then it's rather easy to plan your itinerary! You'll only be able to get a "taste" of our amazing area and with 2 days - you;ll want to spend one day in Banff and one day to make a short visit to Lake Louise and drive the Icefields Parkway.

In Banff, taking some time to enjoy the town, visit the Banff Gondola, the Bow Falls and the Fairmont Banff Springs Hotel. Usually, this takes up one full day. If you happen to have any evening leisure time, it is possible to take a cruise, a nature float or a canoe ride on the river. If you want to maximize your time, you'll want to think about what it is you'd really like to do and how you want to spend your day in Banff.

It is possible to visit the Icefields Parkway and the Columbia Icefields in a day. Know that it is a long, but very enjoyable day and that you are going to want to start your day EARLY. I'd recommend having everyone in the car and heading out by 8:00AM at the latest. Get your maps in advance and know where you are going in advance. Pack a picnic and make sure everyone is on the same plan.

Because you are short on time, take the Highway 1 direct to Lake Louise. You're going to want to make a brief "photo stop" at Lake Louise, before continueing down the highway to Highway 93 North - the Icefields Parkway. May is still early in the Canadian Rockies, so the lakes will still be frozen. Bring your warmest clothes with you, so you can enjoy your day.

Basically, a day on the Icefields Parkway is all about pulling over at all of the viewpoints along the way. Bow Lake and Peyto Lake are 2 of the more famous lakes. You will be able to stop at Bow Lake, but unfortunately the Peyto Lake viewpoint will still be buried in snow. Apart from that everything is very intuitive and well signed along this drive. It's a GREAT time of year to see animals - if you start early you increase your chances of seeing a bear. Drive slow and keep your eyes open. Any viewpoints along the way that you miss, you can simply stop at on the return journey.

The Icefields Explorer is designed to be a "drop-in" tour. No reservations are required. When you arrive at the Icefields Centre, just purchase your tickets and get in line for the next tour. They go non-stop every day.

The only thing to add is "keep your plans flexible." If the weather is bad, you may choose to change your plans. There is potential for snow, rain and sleet at this time of year - as well as glorious sunshine of course! Please bring all of your warmest clothing. Coming from Dubai, you are going to need many, many layers of clothing - so bring them all. You'll need them to enjoy your experience even more!

Sorry, one small correction. In Banff, I just realized that when you are coming in May that the Boat Cruise and the canoe ride probably won't be open for the season.

just so you know Moraine Lk and Peytoo lk will be inaccessible as the roads will not be open. You need to do a whirlwind to do all you want in two days. Stay in Banff, perhaps do the gondola, drive to Lk Louise one morning. If time allows then drive up the parkway as far as the icefield ctr. You'll get a feel for the rockies but you will want to come back for more.

Also do we have to bring heavy snow shoes for the glacier experience?

any type of shoes work on the glacier. The coach stops on the ice and you can get off and explore. It sometimes is slushy but never too wet. Most people get off take a pix or two and get back on. Its usually much windier on top so a hat and gloves may be useful

No, you do't need snowshoes. You shouldn't actually go on the glacier, unless you are with the sno-coach tour (which lets you out in a safe place), or taking a guided walk. When you take a guided walk, you are outfitted with crampons or ice cleats (spikey things you put on your boots, to give you traction).

You can see the glacier from the visitor centre - there are great views - and you can walk up to the toe of the glacier. There is also an exhibit in the visitor centre with displays about the icefield, and local flora and fauna. There are also decks where you can sit out and enjoy the view. These are all free activities.

I really enjoyed the sno-coach tour when I did it last May, and I would recommend it if you are not put off by the price. I did it last year for the first time ever (after living in the Rockies for 30 years) when I had a friend visiting me, and am looking forward to doing it again, next time my father comes to visit. The views of the nearby mountains are amazing. The tour lets you out in a safe place on the glacier for about ten or fifteen minutes. (When we were there, there were about six sno-coaches and a couple of hundred people, so it is not a "mountain solitude" experience.) It is cold - there is a chilly wind sinking down to the valley along the ice, so dress warmly.

It is still worth visiting the Columbia Icefields even if you don't take the sno-coach tour.

levis ~ Are you doing any research of your own? Between this thread and your other thread, I'm sorry to say that it really doesn't appear that way. We want to help you of course. If you do some Google searches at the same time, we can work together. Look at the "Things to Do" which can be found in the left sidebar of each and every forum. You could start with the Canadian Rockies Forum which would have all the attractions for Banff, Jasper and Lake Louise. Or you can look on the Banff, Jasper and LL Forums separately for just their Things to Do.

Have a look:

Now, do you think the Ice Explorer would be a good experience for you? Would you wear solid shoes?
