you can walk from town along both sides of the bow river towards the falls which are beautiful. one side is looking at houses (closest to town) and the other side is more nature, under the banff springs hotel. both nice easy walks.

you can also go along the other way along the river past the bow view motel and again, easy, nice, nature walk.

You can rent canoes at Lake Louise, Moraine Lake, Emerald Lake (in Yoho National Park, just over the border from Banff NP, west of Lake Louise) and somewhere on the Bow River in the town of Banff, I believe.

There are lots and lots of hikes to choose from. How old is your youngest child, and are they generally fit and active?

The lakeside trails at Lake Louise and Moraine Lake are flat and easy. Kids usually love climbing up the Rockpile at Moraine Lake... makes them feel like mountain goats. ;-) Johnston Canyon is a must-do. The trail along the shore of Lake Minnewanka to Steward Canyon is flat and easy. Fairview Lookout at Lake Louise is not a long trail either.

I would suggest stopping by one of the Parks Canada Trail Offices (Banff and Lake Louise) to pick up a brochure with trail listings and basic maps, and also to get info on current wildlife issues. While all of the park is "bear country" and you can potentially run into bears or other wild animals anywhere, you probably won't want to take your kids onto a trail where bears are currently known to be active and frequently sighted. June is also elk calving season, and you won't want to hike where you might run into cows with newborn fawns - they can get aggressive.

This TA page:

tripadvisor.ca/Travel-g154911-c14522/Banff:A…

shows you information about walks around the outskirts of the town of Banff, all of which would be suitable for your kids.

Another close-in option is the walk around Johnson Lake (accessed from the Lake Minnewanka loop road). It has lots of variety! Take along a picnic -- there are picnic tables and an open area well away from cars and safe for the kids to run around in.

It's all about the Lake Minnewanka Road. There are 3 family friendly hikes with incredible picnic spots all along this scenic drive.

1. Stewart Canyon. Start on the shoreline of Lake Minnewanka and hike for 1.5km. Great views. Huge picnic area and a snack bar with ice cream! Also possible to rent a boat and go make your own fun on the lake.

2. Johnson Lake. 3km round trip. A beautiful walk to circumnavigate Johnson Lake. Beach and picnic area = Awesome for families.

3. Lower Bankhead. A prettly little 2 km. loop. A great history lesson for the kids with lots of cool artifacts to look at.
