8-Day trip in RV Calgary to Calgary via Banff & Jasper

Hi all,

Have booked 29' RV with intention of taking the tribe (wife + 2 boys (4 and 7 yr old)) to see the sights in July.

Collect RV on 04 Jul and was thinking 2 days in Banff, 1 day Lake Louise, 2 days in Jasper returning via ? and parking the RV somewhere in Calgary to watch the Stampede on the 13 Jul before returning RV on 14 Jul.

Is this feasable and can anyone suggest a place to park an RV where we can then get to the Stampede (I prefer not to try parking a 29 ft RV in a central Calgary car park!!). Hook up not critical as have 101 black /142 grey water.

Thanks all (especially to Calgary Wife and krp329 who are clearly Banff/Jasper Guru's from having read all your other posts!!)

Matt

Hi Matt, and welcome to the forums!

You should return from Jasper to Banff via the Icefields Parkway (Hwy 93N), the same way that you went. That will give you a second chance to see the awesome scenery in case the views were blocked by clouds or rain on your northbound trip. And even if the weather is nice, the Icefields Parkway is well worth a second look and the views are different when you're going southbound.

If you're going to have the RV in Calgary for Stampede, reserve your campsite *now* (or better yet, yesterday). It's a popular time.

On Stampede Day, park the RV one or two bus stops away from the C-Train line, in a residential area. Catch the bus to the C-Train and catch the C-Train (tram) downtown to see the Stampede. All traffic into most of the downtown core is stopped for the time when the parade is on (7:30 to around noon), except for bus & C-Train service: …calgarystampede.com/traveling-downtown.html

Some Calgary campgrounds (like Calgary West and Calaway Park) offer a shuttle into Calgary & back during the Stampede, so you could ask them what they do for Parade Day.

Don't count on parking in a mall parking lot on Parade Day (a pity, since some malls, like Chinook Centre and Southcentre are close to C-Train stops) - many of them turn over their extra space to organized RV tours during Stampede week, making an improvised campground out of their least-used parking stalls. And the C-Train stations' own parking will fill up very early.

You might pick a smaller mall parking lot, like Northland Village Mall or the Dalhousie Canadian Tire store, to park in and then take a bus to the nearest C-Train (LRT) station. Google Maps can show you transit routes within Calgary; just click on the bus icon instead of the car icon.

People start lining the parade route fairly early; if you're not confident of your ability to get into downtown in time to get a decent spot, you might consider buying bleacher seats on the route (while they last!). The bleacher tickets go to charity. Note that even for bleacher seats, you may be required to arrive by a certain time (e.g. 8:30) to keep from losing your seat. …calgarystampede.com/parade-seating.html

The price may seem a little steep for a hard, backless bleacher seat, but proceeds go to local charities. I hear that the Rotary Club has the best bleacher setup but they're already sold out :(

That sounds like a great plan, Matt! I enjoy taking the family out to the Two Jack Lake Campground and spending an entire day on the Lake Minnewanka Road in and around the campground. Take a day to relax and enjoy the great outdoors around the campground. There's lots of family friendly short hikes, view points to drive and walk to and of course, a visit/picnic to Lake Minnewanka. You can rent a boat and take the kids out on the Lake or just go for a picnic and have ice cream. On your second day - enjoy doing the "urban" part of Banff. The kids will love the town. Make sure to do the Banff Gondola and rent a canoe in the evening on the river.

Parking an RV in Banff can be challenging, so go with a plan! There's free RV parking available downtown - if you can print yourself a map of parking before arriving in busy downtown Banff, this will make things more "smooth". There's underused RV parking on Railway Avenue and by the hospital near Bow Avenue and Wolf Street. There's also RV parking on Bow Avenue. The parking lot at the Banff Gondola is huge and RV friendly.

In Lake Louise - rent a canoe, walk the shoreline, take the Lake Louise Gonolda. Drive the scenic Bow Valley Parkway and stop at Johnston Canyon for a walk along the way.

In Calgary, there is one campground that offers a bus service to town. The Calgary West Campground is by far the most accessible campground to base yourself out of to do "city" stuff. You'll need a reservation and you may want to even make it now!

You'll also need a campground reservation in Banff and Lake Louise at this time. You can make a reservationwith Parks Canada either online or on the phone:

Thanks C-W, gold dust as always! Just wanted to confirm though; does the parade happen every day or just the first?

Calgary West booked already and will ring Calaway tomorrow, so fingers crossed.

Thanks also to BanffLakeLouise guru as well.

Domestic Goddess is happy that things are moving forward (no pun intended!!).

The parade is a big, once-a-year affair.
