Depends what you are looking for? Family hotel, central location, romance, what price range? Give me a bit more detail to work with and I will let you know.

Two that come to mind immediately are the Fantasy Land hotel at WEM and the Holiday Inn - The Palace location. I know both are clear, safe, and not badly located depending on what you are looking for.

Looking at a safe area, will be visiting the mall, IKEA, possibly Fort Edmonton.

2 adults no children so don't need the water slide, etc.

Don't want to spend lots of $ just a clean, comfortable room - would rather spend on shopping, sightseeing.

Thanks.

It sounds like a hotel on Gateway Blvd would serve you well. That's a main road in south Edmonton with plenty of hotels to choose from. The main hotel area on Gateway Blvd is about 10-15 blocks north of the IKEA store, and an easy drive over the Whitemud freeway to WEM.

If you can get a deal, the Coast Terrace Inn is probably the nicest hotel in that area. As ladytonia said, Holiday Inn - The Palace is also nice. A similarly nice mid-priced hotel is the Greenwood Inn. The Super 8 Edmonton South is definitely the best of the bargain chain hotels in the area. Avoid the Gateway Blvd Econolodge - it looks like a bit of a dump.

Try the Holiday inn Express or Wingate inn both at the mall.
