Vancouver to Calgary - Advice on places to stopover needed

Hi All

We are going in September and all we know for sure so far is that we want to do 4 days in Vancouver, then 1 night in Whistler.

After that we want spend 9 days enroute to Calgary taking in Helmcken Falls, Kamloops, Valemount, Jasper, Lake Louise, Banff, without driving everyday so my partner can drink as well.

Also those places except Whistler are up for change if there are similar/better places to go...

Any suggestions how to use the 9 days in terms of things worth seeing and also which places (as in place names rather than accomodations) to stopover to break up the driving?

Have seen lots of posts on routes, so thats pretty obvious to me which way we will go direction wise, just unsure what to do on the way. We keen on photography and scenery and drinking in bars etc.

Any help gratefully recieved :)

Michael

This is a topic that appears about once a day. It really is up to you if you want mountains etc or wine country (Okanagan).

Welcome to the TripAdvisor forums!

The route between Calgary and Vancouver via the Canadian Rocky Mountain parks or the Okanagan valley is a well-travelled and much discussed itinerary here, although because of the geographic scope of it, the information is scattered among many forums. I would suggest browsing recent posts in the following: Canadian Rockies, Alberta, Banff, Jasper, Whistler, Calgary, Edmonton, Vancouver, British Columbia, Kamloops etc.

The forum "search" function will bring up loads of useful information. (Look for it just above the list of messages). Also, the TA "Traveler Articles" and "Top Questions" have a lot of helpful info. Go to the TA page for whatever destination you need advice, then look on the left hand side of the page, and you'll see the Traveller Articles, starting with "More on ...", "Before you go", "Things to Do", etc. Top Question are found in the top right corner.

Online maps can be very useful in laying out your itinerary - they have "directions" features which will give you mileage and driving times between stops. Try www.mapquest.com or www.maps.google.com .

Kamloops is the obvious stop-over point between Vancouver and Jasper, as it is close to halfway and because it is the largest city along the way, however Clearwater, one hour closer to Jasper is a more attractive option, especially considering you mentioned you want to visit Wells Gray Provincial Park in BC. Here is the official site for that park: …gov.bc.ca/bcparks/explore/parkpgs/wells_gry/

Clearwater is, however, quite a small town - so the nightlife would be limited. (It is quite a lot larger than Valemount, though.)

Online resources that will be useful for the Rockies -

The Jasper and Banff/Lake Louise tourism offices:

www.jaspercanadianrockies.com

www.banfflakelouise.com

Parks Canada: www.pc.gc.ca - pick whichever park you want info for (Banff, Jasper, Yoho & Kootenay; once you are at the park's page, you'll see a menu down the left - choose "Visitor information"). Also, when you enter the park and pay your fee, you will be given an informative booklet that has information for all four parks.

Also, one of the main attractions in the area is the drive from Lake Louise to Jasper on a highway known as the Icefields Parkway - www.icefieldsparkway.ca . Although only about 225 km long, I usually recommend making a full day of it, stopping at the many scenic viewpoints, lakes, waterfalls along the way.

Hope this helps!
