Best places to visit in BC with children in summer

We are traveling to Vancouver in August with our 6 / 8 year old children. We are thinking about spending some time exploring BC & wondered the best place to visit.

We are thinking of Kelowna or Victoria but are not committed to either. I have looked at delta grand okanagan resort and some hotels in Victoria. We only have about 3 days and would like to relax by the pool / beach & location is key for us. Any advice on locations as well as hotels / resorts are appreciated. Thank you!

The Grand in Kelowna is on the lake and a short walk to City park with beach and water park for kids. Located downtown with many restaurants. Check KelownaEvents.info for things going on in town while you are here. Any other questions, let me know.

'Relax by the pool/beach'. Three areas for you to consider.

The Okanagan. Kelowna or even Osoyoos. Delta in Kelowna is good or consider Walnut Beach in Osoyoos.

On Vancouver Island, Victoria or Parksville. BC Ferries takes you to Vancouver Island. 1.5 hour ride.

Their are two pools 'by the ocean' in Victoria, the Coast Harbourside Hotel and WorldMark by Wyndham, both side by side. The Coast is currently undergoing a major renovation and will reopen in May. Victoria is often a little bit windy.

Parksville may be the right place though on the coast. Right on the beach. Sandcastle competition. Very near to Rathtrevor Beach Provincial Park. Excellent destination. Pool at Beach Club is indoor though. Tide at Rathtrevor goes out over a mile, lots of great tidal pools and shallower bits of ocean to swim in.

Hi

A few questions so we focus on you getting better answers

What is the range you want to pay for accommodation?

how much time do you want to spend at either location?

and what activities would you want to do? i.e. - outdoors stuff or doing things like Museum.

Yes, I'd look at the south Okanagan as well - Penticton or Osoyous. Victoria would be good, although no real swimming beaches, and then Parksville area would also be great. The ferries will add a lot to the cost of your trip, making the Okanagan a bit cheaper in that respect.

Thanks for all of your replys so far. CBARCH-We are flexible on the $ but our main goal is relaxation & keeping the kids entertained. We are visiting family in Vancouver for 4 days & would have 3 days left to do whatever.

We would like somewhere that is centrally located to a town where we can walk around & go to a park / have dinner etc. Our kids are very active and would love different options. Beach / pool would be great for the kids as they love swimming & also a hotel with a spa would be a bonus!! I have heard the Victoria may be boring for the kids but Kelowna would be more entertaining. Any thoughts/ suggestions are appreciated!! Thank you!!

Hi

Kelowna has more of the big city feel and the same goes for the attractions

whereas Osoyoos and Penticton will have more of a family friendly feel.

August is usually real hot in the range of 28C(80F) to 35C (95F)so it is beach weather Both Osoyoos and Penticton have the beaches and attractions for kids

in Penticton; the Prestige Lakeside Hotel is at the upper end, located right on Okanagan Lake with their own beach, all the others along Lakeshore are older properties and across the road from the beach.

I am not familiar enough about the Osoyoos hotels to recommend.

august is usually busy so you need to book early

http://www.peachfest.com/ the parade is good for kids (and adults once or twice)

and you will probably not find much for the Ironman weekend august 28th

so if you are planning Ironman weekend, Kelowna is a better choice. you can always drive down to Penticton to take in the event.

there is a Farmer's Market every Sat morning. which is worth attending they close 3 blocks of Main St. Cherry season may be over but you may be here for peaches.

and of course we are in wine country. over 100 wineries between Osoyoos and Kelowna.

if you decide that Kelowna is a better choice then the Delta Grand Okanagan and the Manteo resort should be on the list.

cheers

hi

the lastest for ice cream for kids is Ogos on Main Street across from city hall. they have a big scupture of the ogopogo. only open in the summer months.

Tickleberrys may still have the best ice cream but those are adult debates (-:

I'd like to know your dates for the Okanagan. If you were planning on coming on the long weekend (Aug 3-6) then you do NOT want to stay in Kelowna. City park is closed for the Center of Gravity Festival and downtown is a complete gong show. This festival is geared towards the 16-25 year old crowd. Peachfest in Penticton August 8-12 is geared towards the family but if you want to be in Penticton for that then you'd better book your rooms now. I would lean towards the Delta Grand in Kelowna with your kids. Manteo Beach is very nice but the Grand is more central to everything. You have City Park with it's beach, playgrounds and waterpark and a nice swimming pool on site. I've never stayed at Manteo Beach so I can't give you any information on it.
