Tofino in January for one day. What to do?

Going to be on Vancouver Island for one day and two nights. Arriving in Nanaimo, departing from Victoria. Is it worth driving to Tofino for a few hours to enjoy the scenary in January?

No.

It'll take 3 hours to drive to Tofino from Nanaimo, and then it's a 5 hour drive to Victoria (3 of those hours along the same route back to Nanaimo). Honestly I'd just save it for another time and spend the time exploring the coastline between Nanaimo and Victoria - not that it's similar to Tofino, but you'll get more out of the experience based on your limited time.

Tofino's not really a place where you can just show up, look out the window, and tick it off your list as been there/done that. You need plenty of time to get off the main highway and into the boardwalk rainforest trails, spend lazy hours meandering along the beaches, etc. It's not really a quick day trip destination (in my opinion)...

It *can* be done, but I don't know if I'd recommend doing it.

Further to BCRobyn's correct advice, is a link to the Sutton Pass DriveBC webcam which is currently showing a snowstorm. For those unfamiliar with this road it is best not driven in a rental car without winter tires (not provided by rental car agency) or chains (not allowed on a rental car).

You'll get a good taste of the Island by driving the route Robyn suggests. Take the Scenic Drive from Ladysmith to Chemainus (turn left onto Old Chemainus Road just past the Safeway at Coronation Mall south of Ladysmith). Take the self guided tour of Totem Poles in Duncan. Consider the Mill Bay ferry to Brentwood Bay and then into Victoria. Or over the Malahat (highway 1) to Victoria. Drive the Scenic Route around Victoria (about 20 miles). If you have time head out to Sooke and go to Whiffen Spit.

That will give you a good tour of the central and southern island in your alloted time span.

Enjoy your visit.
