Neighborhoods to avoid (for being dangerous)

Is there any? I'll be staying at the YWCA downtown, and I'm planning to visit Stanley Park, Grouse Mountain and Science World.

Any other ideas?

Personally I don't think there are really any neighbourhoods that you need to avoid especially bearing in mind the list of activities you are going to do. Some will recommend avoiding the Downtown East Side however when we've been in this area it does not feel unsafe, just uncomfortable (large number of homeless folks, open drug use and the issues related to living in an impoverished area).

Sticking to the well worn tourist paths you'll encounter no problems. Vancouver is a very safe, friendly, clean and green city!

Enjoy your visit!

Tks. Buccaneer. I asked just to be sure because I've read that Vancouver is pretty safe and according to your picture of Downtown East Side, it's not different from many places I go here in my city, so nothing to worry.

The Y is in a great area. You might want to avoid Hastings Street between Abbott and Gore.

Here are some other ideas for your consideration:

Granville Island and False Creek

Stanley Park, including the Aquarium

Gastown - for a self guided walking tour: http://www.gastown.org/history/index.html --> take a self guided walking tour. Otherwise this historic birthplace of Vancouver will just be brick and stone to you.

Chinatown

Museum of Anthropology at UBC

Robson Street

Bill Reid Gallery at 639 Hornby St. between Dunsmuir and Georgia

Vancouver Art Gallery, with its great Gallery Restaurant

Grouse Mountain

Lynn Canyon Susp Bridge (free) or Capilano Susp Bridge ($$$)

Maritime Museum - www.vancouvermaritimemuseum.com/page216.htm

Van Dusen Gardens

Queen Elizabeth Park and the Bloedel Conservatory

Compared to Sao Paulo you'll find Vancouver about as dangerous and intimidating as Disneyland.

Hane divertido!

Since Hastings is also a main thoroughfare the reference is only to a few blocks of EAST hastings that is between Gastown and Chinatown.

Agreed. Tourists often end up stumbling through our famous downtown east side by mistake on their way between Gastown and Chinatown. I don't think its any more or less dangerous than anywhere else, but it can be very uncomfortable for some people. You may get hassled by people who are high on drugs or looking for a handout, but no one is going to assault you.

Certain neighbourhoods have been known to render people insensate with boredom but in the name of civility they shall forever remain anonymous.

That's what I thought. I won't tell anyone I'm from Sao Paulo because THEY might be scared of me.
