Help for our trip in Sept 2012

We have now booked our 3 night pre cruise stay in Vancouver. We are staying at Executive Hotel Vintage Park. We are from the UK and its our first visit so I am hoping you can help with a few things.

Places to eat - we like Thai, Steak - almost anything except French.

Places to visit - would like to see wildlife

Anything else you think we should know

Thank you

Your hotel is 15 minutes by foot from the many restaurants of Yaletown and less from the many restaurants of Davie Street. You'll have no problems finding food. Finding wildlife might be easier in Wigan than Vancouver. Bear, deer and coyotes occasionally wander though the suburbs, but not very predictably. There are grizzlies and wolves behind a fence up Grouse Mountain.

Hi garrypawson,

Welcome to the Vancouver Forum.

To get things started for you how about having a look on the right side of the this page and you'll see a lot of articles under the title of Top questions about Vancouver. You'll find many of the answers to the questions you'll have there.

Secondly have a look at the free online version of Frommers Vancouver and you'll discover lots of info including printable walking routes, suggested itineraries and the like. Great source of info!

www.frommers.com/destinations/vancouver/

Happy Planning!

Edit! Meant to add then come back with more specific questions and an itinerary and you'll get lots of advice targeted to your specific needs!

thanks for the help so far. Just going to have a read through the Frommers guide. I think I saw something about Grouse Mountain before - we do not intend to hire a car - we are happy enough with public transport/taxi. Is Grouse Mountain accessable without a car?

Yes, you can easily get to Grouse Mountain on the public transit buses. A nice way to go is to use the sea bus. It is part of the transit system, so you wouldn't be buying another ticket. You can catch it at the end of the skytrain line at the waterfront.

Make sure you leave yourselves a day for Stanley Park! Gastown is fun too.

Hi Garry ~

You might like to have a look at the following extensive collection of things to do in Vancouver.

Stanley Park, including the Aquarium

Gastown - for a self guided walking tour: http://www.gastown.org/history/index.html --> take a self guided walking tour. Otherwise this historic birthplace of Vancouver will just be brick and stone to you.

Chinatown

Robson Street

Bill Reid Gallery at 639 Hornby St. between Dunsmuir and Georgia

Vancouver Art Gallery, with its great Gallery Café

The Marine Building at 355 Burrard St. for the exterior, facade, entrance, foyer and the inside of the brass-doored elevators. Notice the marine and ship themes. Office hours only.

NORTH SHORE:

Grouse Mountain

Lynn Canyon Susp Bridge (free) or Capilano Susp Bridge ($$$)

*************

SOUTH SIDE OF FALSE CREEK

Granville Island and False Creek

Maritime Museum - www.vancouvermaritimemuseum.com/page216.htm

Van Dusen Gardens

Queen Elizabeth Park and the Bloedel Conservatory

**********

4 Self Guided walks - vancouver.ca/commsvcs/…index.htm

Museum of Anthropology at UBC

Nitobe Memorial Gardens at UBC - http://www.botanicalgarden.ubc.ca/nitobe

Greenheart Canopy Walkway at UBC Botanical Gardens –

You can actually locate them on Google Maps. Entering the name of the place works just as well as entering the address. Better, actually, if you don't know the address!

maps.google.ca

As far as restaurants go, you've got 11 months yet, and there's no telling how many of the restaurants we might name today will still be in business then.

<<Anything else you think we should know>> I think you should know that there is a Lancs mate of yours who runs the Wigan Pier Restaurant in Squamish, about 45 minutes north of Vancouver. If you end up wanting to go for a scenic drive up that way, it might be worth a look see.

Will we be too late for Whale Watching tours? We are in Vancouver 11 - 14th Sept and then cruising down to Hawaii - does anyone thing we may see some migrating whales on our way down?

Thanks again

You will still be able to go whale watching either out of Vancouver however it will take a big chunk of one day. Example of one company below of which I have no experience with.

For whale watching, keep in mind that these are resident pods of orca, not migrating humpbacks.
