telegraph cove to vancouver

We leave telegraph cove at 4.30pm and need to fly out of vancouver two days later. I know its a long drive that first evening, but was thinking of trying to get to Salt Spring Island. Probably too ambicious, so any other suggestions. Would like to relax, swim with family with teenagers for a day if possible? Thanks in advance for any suggestions. (Never been to Canada before, so all will be new to us)

How about a stop in Parksville? http://www.visitparksvillequalicumbeach.com/ Its closer than Salt Spring and has a broad beach for a walk or swim. www.beachclubbc.com is one of many hotels.

Yes, I think Parksville will be a more realistic destination for you. Takes a couple of ferries (and the associated scheduling risks that comes with taking ferries) out of the mix. However, if you are leaving TC at 4:30 (is that on the road at 4:30, or finishing your tour at 4:30, which means you will not likely be on the road before 5:00), then you are looking at driving fairly late into that evening, especially if you stop for a proper dinner somewhere (probably Campbell River).

Given how late in the day you are getting going, what about a night in Campbell River, and then your second night in Parksville or Nanaimo ready to catch the ferry across the next day?

Just wanted to say you could easily drive from Telegraph Cove to Parksville in under 3 hours...hwy 19 is divided from Campbell River down.. we drove today from Coal Harbour (by Port Hardy) to Nanaimo in just over 4 hours..Parksville is a much nocer destination than Campbell River..Rathtrevor provincial park is a great place to spend some time and as it's light so late you'll easily make Parksville..just be sure to prebook a place to stay as it's popular in the summer.

Thanks again for suggestions - great ideas. Still deliberating, as really wanted two nights in same place and as its our last two in Canada before flying back to UK, wanted them to be in nice spot which is why I came up with Salt Island (presume its pleasant there?), but last ferry leaves at 9pm so may be cutting it fine. The sensible option would be as said before to stay somewhere like Parksville/Qualicum??

I think Parksville or Qualicum Beach as well. Salt Spring is lovely, but you have to deal with ferries and that eats up a lot of time.

When you head south from Telegraph and reach Campbell RIver (where you may want to stop for a bite to eat or a leg stretch) stay on Hwy 19A (also known as Old Island Hwy). THere are directional signs when you come over the bridge in North Campbell RIver - take the one that says Quadra Island/downtown Campbell River (turn left at the lights). That will take you through town, and then you can stay on 19A. It's a slower route, but much more scenic. You will drive through Courtenay as well and some of the drive will be along shoreline.

Sounds good, thanks. So probably one night in Qualicum area, then what about next night? Could stay 2 nights I suppose; or other suggestions, before getting flight on pm of day 3?

Stay both nights in Qualicum. There is a cheese factory there, Coombs is minutes away and a fun place to wander, Cathedral Grove isn't far and it's a beautiful walk amongst the huge Douglas Fir trees. Little Qualicum fish hatchery might interest you. Plus the beach at Qualicum is very nice. There is a bird sanctuary in Coombs and a Butterfly world. You won't get bored :)

There are some quite nice places to stay in Qualicum/Parksville area so your 2 nights would be in lovely surroundings. besides previously mentioned places one of our absolute favorites is Englishman Falls Park.. a really great spot for a hike..not strenuous but lots of variety.

look at places like Tigh Na Mara for accommodation
