biking/hiking in october for 10 days Victoria/vancouver area

My husband and I are driving out to Victoria Oct 5th for 10 days to tour the area and are gathering info on places to see/stay at/eat at/tour starting in Victoria and ending over in Spokane, WA on the 16th. We are from northern WI and debating flying or driving and bringing our bikes. thanks for your help!

So what is driving or flying?

If driving of course bring the bikes there's nothing like having your own best 2 wheeled friend along.

There are lots of good cycling opportunities around Victoria. Google CycleVancouverIsland and you will find commercial maps and some that are free. When you are in Victoria, go to the GVCC (Greater Victoria Cycling Coalition) office - it is on the north side of the square beside City Hall - they have good maps and lots of advice.

Another suggestion is to google East Sooke Park - you can cycle there (a reasonably long ride) or drive - lots of trails either in the hills or along the water - this will give you a good sense of the West Coast topography and is a wonderful place to visit - not well known to tourists.

Another alternative is to cycle to Saltspring Island or any of the other Gulf Islands - check out the BC Ferries website for schedules - the Lochside Trail takes you from Victoria right out to the ferry terminal, with a few sections on public roads.

Yet another suggestion is to ride out to Brentwood from victoria, take the ferry to Mill Bay and then ride to the Cowichan Valley for a tour of the local wineries.

Unfortunately the GVCC office that was in Centennial Square is now closed.

However you can see quite a few trail maps online at http://www.crd.bc.ca/parks/brochure.htm and www.gvcc.bc.ca/recrides/goosebrochure.shtml .

I beg to differ-cycling Saltspring Island is for the hard core cyclist only-the mountains in the middle couple with some wickedly steep hills in odd places make it a less than salubrious ride.

Even the flatter north end of Saltspring holds some nasty surprises for the unwary.

I love the Gulf Islands, but they've always offered some tough cycling. However, you can expect quieter roads, which is nice.

Other than Victoria and Spokane, what do you want to do? Are you planning to spend 10 days around Victoria and then fly to Spokane? Are you planning to start in Victoria and spend 10 days making your way either through BC or WA state to Spokane? Are you hoping to go up island to places like Tofino or Campbell River?

If you can help us understand what you need, then we will be able to provide you with more accurate answers.

We plan to stay around Victoria for 3-4 days and travel up to Vancouver area for a couple days. Our other stops are dependent on where it is best to see? We will bring our hybrid bikes and like back road biking but are not into technical mountain biking. We enjoy hiking also and jist plsin sightseeing. Places to stay and eat at moderate pricing would be appreciated as well as if we can see whales this time of year and are salmon running? lastly what temps whould we plan on? thanks again, Zauggs
