Well there are a few things that you might be interested in...Down at the marine terminal there is a fantastic display upstairs that are visual and interactive of the sites and sounds of Cape Breton. Also if there is a cruise ship in, right in this same building on the main floor there is a huge craft show that shows the many talented people we have living here. You could visit the oldest church not far from there as well as the Cossitt and Jost House Museum. Just outside Sydney in Glace Bay you could visit the Miners Museum and in Louisbourg the Fortress of Louisbourg.

Something many cruise passengers do is look at the excursions offered by the cruise line, then post on here for suggestions about what local companies do the same thing. Often more personalized that way.

The only thing in walking distance would be the Joan Harriss Pavillion which is the building at the Pier and across the street the church. The Cossit House also being right there on the next block up. If you are interested in a little shopping and I mean little, there is Charlotte St a 3 minute walk from th Pier. Most of the places that cruise ship visitors go when here are outside Sydney. They go to Baddeck, Glace Bay, and Louisbourg.

Check out toms port guides tomsportguides.com/SydneyNS-10-05-2011.pdf

There is very little within walking distance of the pier.

Louisbourg is a spectacular historical reconstruction of a fortified town from 1744.

Baddeck is a scenic spot and has the Alexander Graham Bell Museum.

Your best bet is to rent a car or hire a taxi or driver.
