Day trip to 1,000 islands from Toronto?

Is it possible to take a day trip to 1,000 Islands from Toronto? If so, what are the tours that you would recommend? I would be taking my elderly father and father in law so we are not looking for anything too strenuous.

Hi yoshibaba;

Are you asking about bus tours to the 1000 Islands, from Toronto, or are you planning to drive there yourself ?

Hi Yoshibaba,

Welcome to the TORONTO TRAVEL FORUM

Are you talking an Organized Motorcoach Tour out of Toronto… or going there on your own self-driving? (Considered ALWAYS the best way to explore & discover Canada).

--- --- ---

Self-Driving is certainly do-able… It’ll take you aprox 3 Hours from Downtown Toronto to reach Kingston (265 Kms)… and another 30 Minutes to drive to Gananoque… the small nearby Ontario Town that is considered to be “the Gateway to the 1000 Islands”

The BEST Cruises are run either by Gananoque Boat Lines out of Gananoque, or nearby Ivy Lea.. www.ganboatline.com or Rockport Boat Lines out of the village of Rockport = www.rockportcruises.com

Gananque Boat Lines is most known for their 1, 2-1/2 and 5 Hour increments… the longer 5 Hour Cruise includes a 2 Hour Stop-Over at the beautiful Heart Island to see Boldt Castle… the 2-1/2 Hour Tour covers the same circuit on the water, but doesn’t make the stop-over.

*NOTE – Boldt Castle is on one of the US Islands… so to visit you’ll need proper paperwork including a Passport.

Rockport Boat Lines is most known for their “theme” cruises (Two Castle Tours - 4th of July Fireworks Tour etc), although they too do wonderful circuits thru the Islands.

While in the region, if you have a car, you’ll also want to make time to drive the 1000 Islands Parkway from Gananoque to Butternut Bay just west of Brockville… this is considered to be one of the prettiest drives in Ontario.

EDIT... Looks like RESCUE TEAM and I were drafting at the same time... so hence the overlap in our most important original Question... "HOW will you be travelling?"

Thank you both for your prompt replies. We will be driving to Toronto from Boston, MA. We can either drive to 1,000 Island or take a bus tour there. Do you know of any organized one day 1,000 Island bus tours from Toronto?

Hi Yoshibaba,

<< We can either drive to the 1000 Islands or take a bus tour there >>

As I mentioned above... the BEST way to see Canada is by car. Organized Motorcoach Tours here just don't go to the "best bits" of our country (ie you'd be driven right to the town of Gananoque and probably never see the 1000 Islands Parkway).

Organized Motorcoach Tours also tend to be very EXPEN$IVE in that they provide little more than transportation (BIG Mark-ups IF they do include any other items in their packages)

Personally, I'd drive... then you'd have the ultimate in flexibility when it comes to the route you choose to take there and back (getting off of the Expressway and taking the scenic sideroads like Old Hwy 2, and the United Empire Loyalist Parkway is highly recommended) AS well as the fact that you can spend as much time as you like in any one spot with your elderly father and NOT BE at the beck-and-call of an Organized Tour Operator being herded to and fro.

Cheers!

Hi yoshibaba;

I too would suggest driving your self. The 1000 Islands are about a 3 hour drive east of Toronto (180 miles / 290 km.) so you will spend a minimum of 6 hours aboard a bus.

The town of Gananoque (pronounced GAN-AN-OCK-WAY) is known as the "Gateway to the Thousand Islands". From there you can take a boat tour of the 1000 Islands aboard the Gananoque Boat Line, “The Only Boat Line that Shows You All the Islands!”

www.ganboatline.com/

They offer 1 hr, 2.5 hr, and 5 hour tours. The 5 hour tour stops at Boldt Castle, which was built in 1900 by the former owner of the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel in New York City. If you wish to walk about the island and tour through the castle, you will need to clear U.S. Customs, as the island is in American waters. Be sure that you bring your identification as required.

While in Gananoque, check out;

The Thousand Islands Playhouse for great live theatre.

1000 Islands Skydeck

If you decide to stay in Gananoque overnight, I strongly recommend the Islandview Inn Bed & Breakfast, which is located only 1 block from where the tour boats dock, and the St Lawrence River.

The Holiday Inn Express would be my second choice, but is located at the opposite end of town.
