Is 4-days a reasonable time? We don't have to come drive back to quebec city, but fly back home directly from PEI. If so, any recommendations on what to do?
thanks!!!

The problem you have is that the cost of a rental car one way from QC to PEI or even Moncton will be very very expensive. The people that have posted about that have reported that they all gave up because of cost.
the best way to do this is to take the Train to Moncton then get a car from there to visit PEI and then fly back from Moncton but flying from Moncton will also mean you have a connection in Montreal to get to QC so taking the train back might be a good idea.
getting from QC to PEI without your own car is not easy.
Thanks so much for your advice... would Maritime Bus from Quebec city to Moncton be a good idea then? and rent a car in Moncton. though.. seems like bus will take our whole day in our 4-day trip. we will be flying back to Toronto directly at the end of the trip.
It is much easier to visit Halifax and PEI then QC and PEI that would be my recommendation.
Even though QC is unique; in Halifax you will find historic buildings and a Citadel and a short drive to PEI via the Confederation Bridge going one way and then taking the Wood Island to Caribou ferry the other way.
So you get a return flight which might be cheaper then a split ticket.
thank you... but I will be in Quebec city for a conference. so our trip will have to start from Quebec city
OK so another suggestion only because I think you need to spend too much time to just get there when you want to go to PEI instead of visiting PEI. It looks close but it is not.
Have a look at the Charlevoix area and as far north as Tadoussac in the Saguenay where there are boat tours to see some fjords and whales. http://www.tourisme-charlevoix.com/en/?season=summer
or, look at the Eastern Township http://www.easterntownships.org/touristRoute
that way you could rent a car right after QC and either return it to QC or from the Eastern Townships to Montreal to fly home.
Great!! thanks so much cbaarch. it's really appreciated!!!

So will driving - it's about 9 hours, according to google maps.... although at 925 km, I'm not quite sure how they came up with that estimate.
My family of 6 is about to fly from Vancouver to Montreal and then rent a car and drive to PEI. I was told it will be 12 hours to drive but with 4 kids and sightseeing it will obviously take longer. I feel that if you want to tour around then rent a car so that you have control of where you get to see. The bus and train will give you some sights but you are limited to their routes. I can't remember if you have said when you are going but remember Canada Day festivities are going to make things more busy in PEI and I found the hotels and car rental went up alot between June 28 and July 1 and many places were booked well in advance :-) If you drive back then there is a one way bridge toll of $46.50, I believe is the cost. I am really looking forward to PEI...but not to the black flies and mosquitoes! LOL Angela
