Guadalcanal general tourism...

We are staying in Solomons only for one week. We are booking only one night in Honiara at each end of the trip, treating it as a gateway to other parts of Solomon Is. for our short visit. We won't be seeing anything of Guadalcanal. Are we remiss to gloss over the island? If we can book an extra full day to spend there (based in Honiara? somewhere else?) should we?

thank you

Honiara is the best place for shopping (apart from Auki-specific items at the Saturday market in Auki).

There are beaches open to the public along the coast west o the town, but they are not particularly exciting.

Apart from the Marau Sound, and hikes acrosss the island, the only other reason to spend time on Guadalcanal on such a short visit would be if you are interested in World War II history.

You can get to the American War Memorial easily by taxi, and would only need an hour to visit it.
