Travelling from to Cochrane from Toronto

Hi everyone,

I am looking to take a trip to Cochrane from Toronto (to visit the polar bears!). Greyhound does not have fare listed about their schedule(0051 and 0063) on the website. Anyone knows what would the price range be? Besides taking the hound what would be the most economical way to travel to Cochrane from Toronto? Thanks.

I see on the Greyhound website that 2 bus companies are involved: Ont Northland to Sudbury, then Greyhound to Toronto. That's likely why they request people call 1-800-661-8747 for fare information.

As an alternative, you may wish to compare that to taking the Northland bus to Sudbury, then catching viarail.ca to Toronto.

However, the bus connection in Sudbury is only 15 minutes - and the bus from Sudbury to Toronto is an hour shorter - so I'd stick with the bus. Via only runs on certain days - and they definitely can't guarantee connection from bus.

Probably not as economical, but there is also the Northlander Train:

Hi there,

i live in Moose Factory which is up in James Bay. I travel this route all the time. Here's the deal:

You can take a train from Toronto to Cochrane, or if you bus it you will make it to Timmins by Greyhound and then from there, you will be transported to Cochrane by another bus company part way and then by a transport service for the last 20minutes. They only do it on an "as needed" basis. The bus from Toronto to Cochrane is LONG! In case you didn't know. There is also a way to do it from TO-Northbay and then to Cochrane, but I'm not too familiar with that way. You could also bus to North Bay and then train to Cochrane.

Hope this is not too confusing!

Hello Kure.

Did you end up making the trip up to Cochrane? If so, did you end up taking the train or bus? Thanks.

I would also suggest the train rather than the bus. The bus is a REAL milk run and wanders off the highway - not fun. While the train is not speedy at least it joggles you to sleep along the way and you have room to get up and walk aorund.

Hi....I am also looking into taking a trip to Cochrane, and would like to ask a question of you knowledgeable people. If we take the train from Toronto (which is probably what we'd do), what's the best way to get to the train station from the airport? Is there a shuttle? Taxis? Or would we be better off perhaps making a week out of it and taking the train all the way from NYC? Once in Cochrane, do we need a car to get around? If not, how do we get from place to place? We would definitely want to see the polar bears and do some walking trails/sightseeing. Thanks...

I can help with the Toronto end.

It's easy enough to get between the airport and the train station, which is right downtown. Probably the best way is the Airport Express bus -- the Royal York Hotel is its second stop and Union Station is right across the street. $16.95 per person.

The most conveinant way of travelling to Cochrane from Toronto is to take the Ontario Northlander train. The bus ride is simply too long and uncomfortable. I recommend driving, then you can enjoy all the stops along the way and pricing is affordable.

To anyone who is wishing to go to Cochrane or travel even further north to Moosonee/Moose Factory, be aware. There are no polar bears to be seen, perhaps a brown bear if you head to the "dump."

However, if you are an avid nature lover, there is plent of scenary. Fishing and hunting are prime activities and during the winter, winter activities are limitless. (Snowmobiling, snowshoeing, ice fishing, hockey tournaments etc)

There are no public modes of transportation in Cochrane, Moosonee or Moose Factory other than taxis.

If you are heading to any of those destinations, be prepared to thoroughly plan your trip if you want to make the most of it. There is little to nothing to do in these towns when it comes to culture, entertainment, dining and shopping.

Actually, the above post is not totally correct. There are Polar Bears in Cochrane. It is one of a handful of places in the world that has a Polar Bear Habitat. You can view the Polar Bears and even swim with them in a pool that has a glass separation between the polar bears and the visitors. It is open seven days a week all year long.
