Glacier NP and Waterton NP

We are planning a trip at the end of July, traveling with 4 adults and 2 school age kids. All very active and love to hike. Tent camping 4 nights in GNP (reservations made at fish creek) and 2-3 nights in the Waterton park area (reservations not made yet). We would love any advice of "must do" activities and helpful planning tips.

Hi Becky,

First things first: I would look into reserving camping space in Waterton as soon as possible. Because of the effects of the Kenow Fire in 2017, a number of campsites will not be available this year (I.e. Crandall Campground). As such, the sites that are available may be in higher demand. Remember, there are also two CGs outside the Park, too!

As far as what to do... The Crypt Lake Trail is excellent! There are a number of other great hikes, too (but check the Parks Canada website regularly, to see what is/ will be open - this info may change, closer to your trip).

The golf course is great, if you're into golf. The alpine riding stables will be offering horseback tours. There are kayak / SUP rentals. Pat's Waterton (the local service station) rents bicycles, etc! Parks Canada sometimes offers different interp programs that can be fun and interesting.

Don't hesitate to ask, if you have any other questions!

I second Keith's recommendation of the Crypt Lake Trail, if hiking your thing. Keep in mind it will be a full day hike, but well worth the time. In addition to his other excellent advice, I would also suggest the Shoreline Cruise. It is very informative about the area and may be of interest, with children. Also, the park rangers frequently offer a variety of informative guided nature hikes and other activities that are geared towards families and are free to anyone interested. The Information Centre and the printed information guide you'll receive when you enter the park would have information on what's happening during the week you're there. The campgrounds in GNP would also offer a variety of park-sponsored activities like this.

Please familiarize yourself with the precautions you need to take when camping in bear country, if you are new to that aspect of camping. That knowledge will keep both yourselves and the wildlife safe.
