Waterton Lakes Fire 2018

Parks Canada has issued an Evacuation Alert as of Aug 23, due to an out of control wildfire burning south of the park. What this means is that all residents are on alert in case an Evacuation Order is issued, which would give them an hour to evacuate the park.

Travellers are advised to keep this in mind as you make holiday plans.

All hiking trails and bodies of water within the park are currently closed. :-(

Alas, we are unable to predict forest fire behaviour.

The fire is currently stable thanks in part to some trivial amounts of rainfall and cooler temperatures in the area. But the evacuation alert remains in effect and everything in the park except for the actual town itself is off limits.

As of this morning, Parks Canada has lifted the evacuation alert for Waterton, thanks to a good rainfall yesterday/overnight. Please be advised, the fire is still burning and the status could change again. But, at this time, the evacuation alert has been lifted.

Just visited Waterton last week. Some trails are open (lower Bertha falls) but roads heading west are closed (Cameron lake rd and Red Rock ). Area was hazy from smoke but not irritating. Recommend going to the Waterton Visitor Center in downtown to get latest trail information.
