Ipswich or Bury?

We're spending a night in Long Melford (where we've been before) later this month and wanted to spend the next night somewhere nearby-ish. Where would you recommend for two lively 60 year-olds who like antique shops, churches and cathedrals, shopping, good pubs and great restaurants - Ipswich or Bury (or somewhere else)? All advice gratefully received - many thanks.

Bury St Edmunds, every time. It’s a pretty town - and if you like cathedrals, it’s the location of the cathedral for the Ipswich diocese. https:/…St_Edmundsbury_Cathedral

It has a very pretty old centre, with a good range of restaurants plus Abbey ruins.

Ipswich is bigger and a much more workaday town. It has some pretty corners but has more of a down-at-heel feeling than pretty, prosperous-looking Bury St Ed’s.

Another very attractive option - lacking a cathedral but full of lovely buildings - is Saffron Walden.

Hello,

We agree with Bury as a place to visit.

We also suggest staying in Lavenham because we lived nearby.

Perhaps consider

Lavenham is a must...and to answer your question,Bury is a pretty little town and would be my choice.

The market square in Lavenham is simply stunning and is perhaps the prettiest village in the country.

We have actually visited Lavenham but only for a couple of hours. It's stunning.

Clare is the smallest town in Suffolk and is home to beautiful pastel coloured buildings as well as thatch.

We particularly enjoyed the country park with the ruins of the old castle and there is an excellent little tearoom by the now defunct railway station.

Others to consider are Cavendish and Kersey.

Definately agree about staying in Bury. Lots of choices for meals, drinks and shops. Easy to get to the other places mentioned from Bury as well. Though these same places are closer to get to from Long melford where your initially staying.
